About the Opportunity

We are currently seeking a Senior Accountant to join our team in North Vancouver, and a second individual in Turkapally, Hyderabad to establish a new team.

Reporting to the Controller (Canada), you will ensure the integrity of accounting information by recording, verifying, consolidating, and entering transactions. You will work closely with the Controller to understand in sufficient detail the budgets and strategic direction of R&D (clinical, preclinical and manufacturing) and Corporate activities.

More specifically, you will be responsible for preparing and recording asset, liability, revenue, and expense entries by compiling and analyzing account information, as well as maintaining and balancing subsidiary accounts by verifying, allocating, posting, reconciling transactions and resolving discrepancies.

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Maintaining the general ledger, preparing a trial balance, and reconciling entries, as well as preparation of accurate journal entries, detailed reports, and account reconciliations
  • Performing monthly accounting for R&D and corporate activities (i.e. monitoring contract schedules and timelines, preparing journal entries for accruals, tracking invoices, confirming department and account coding, etc.) and contributing to the preparation and presentation of monthly reporting of R&D cost trends to Controller and/or management
  • Administering the preparation of a monthly account analysis of balance sheet and P/L to ensure financials are accurately stated and variances are understood and documented
  • Reviewing the financial terms and accounting treatment for all new contracts, work orders, and change orders and forecast expenses to determine monthly accrual entries
  • Working with business partners to generate various accruals including but not limited to R&D, legal, facilities and IT activities
  • Summarizing financial position by collecting information, preparing the balance sheet, profit and loss, and other statements as well as printing and verifying cheques
  • Monitoring and preparing cash accounts, printing and verifying cheques, preparing monthly reconciliations, and handling and discrepancies
  • Distributing payroll costs to the appropriate general ledger accounts
  • Providing full payroll functions in compliance with state and central tax laws (for India position only)
  • Posting and reviewing invoice information, routing invoices for approvals, and providing support in resolving issues
  • Assisting external audit by analyzing general ledger accounts, preparing schedules and documentation for external audits, completing internal SOX audits and various other regulatory audits
  • Maintaining vendor accounting files and related spreadsheets, partnering with vendors to obtain updates, as well as managing vendor confirmations to verify account balances and project status
  • Ensuring timely preparation and filing of various periodic tax returns and related government reporting (sales/use tax, etc.)
  • Providing ad-hoc support for technical accounting issues and creating ad-hoc reports and analysis (i.e. vendor analysis, internal/external spend analysis, etc.), and securing financial information by completing database backups

About You

In order to qualify for these roles, you need to have a related degree (eg. Accounting, Finance, Economics) along with a professional designation plus a minimum of 5 years of professional experience.

You must possess:

  • A CPA, CA, CGA, CMA designation (or equivalent) if you are applying for the role in Canada
  • A CA or an ICWAI designation, if you are applying for the role in India
  • Previous experience with QuickBooks (required)
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Strong understanding of taxation and regulatory requirements within each jurisdiction including GAAP and IFRS

The following are considered assets:

  • Previous experience in a publicly traded company
  • Previous experience in the science/biotech/pharmaceutical/manufacturing industries
  • Public Accounting experience
