Position Summary

The Human Resources Manager is accountable for the overall direction and leadership of the Medicine Hat human resources function. With an understanding of current and future business needs, this role is responsible for developing, implementing and coordinating site HR strategy, support and services in alignment with the both the Medicine Hat business strategy and global HR strategy. 

As a member of the Site Management Team and in collaboration with the HR team, the Human Resources Manager builds and maintains solid working relationships and an HR business partnership across the site. Drawing on functional expertise and utilizing professional guidance, this role drives a customer-centric one team culture in Medicine Hat. In addition, as a member of the Global Human Resources Leader team, this role supports identification, scoping and implementation of functional HR initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Provide proactive and experiential HR advice to the Plant Manager in development and deployment of fit-for-purpose people practices
  • Ensure that a true HR business partner relationship is developed across the site
  • Actively participate as a member of the Site Management Team, and collaborate with team members to ensure HR initiatives meet business needs and address a broad range of functional HR priorities
  • Ensure human resource strategies and tactical plan are aligned with the Medicine Hat site strategy
  • Develop, implement and monitor the appropriate and consistent application of site human resource policies, procedures, practices and systems
  • Responsible for organizational design, operational workforce planning and change management processes to ensure the Medicine Hat site is effectively structured and staffed to meet business needs
  • Ensure performance management and recognition systems are in place, and that managers and supervisors exhibit a high degree of competence in their application
  • Ensure robust career development and succession planning processes are in place to maximize the talent pipeline
  • Ensure employee training and development systems are in place and continually enhanced to provide employees with the skills and competencies for effective performance
  • Ensure a high-quality recruitment framework is provided at all levels within the organization
  • Ensure appropriate remuneration and benefit systems are maintained to attract, retain and motive employees; provide guidance and recommendations to site management on compensation matters
  • Provide proactive, professional guidance concerning employment related legislation
  • Monitor best practices in the HR field and introduce these practices to the Medicine Hat site as appropriate
  • Actively participate as a member of the Operations HR Team and Global HR Leaders team; support the Global HR Team in the development and implementation of global strategic HR plans, global HR Systems and best practice global policies and procedures
  • Utilize functional expertise to develop optimization strategies aimed at organizational culture and employee engagement for safe, reliable and sustainable operation

Qualifications

Experience and Technical Skills/Knowledge

  • Post-secondary degree in Human Resources, Business Management or other related discipline
  • CPHR designation, or current progress towards a professional HR designation, an asset
  • Eight years of progressively senior experience in a human resources generalist role, encompassing a broad knowledge of HR practices
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered
  • Solid knowledge of Alberta employment legislation
