About the Organisation

Anyinginyi Health Aboriginal Corporation (Anyinginyi) is a multi-disciplinary organisation which provides primary health care services to the Aboriginal people of Tennant Creek and the surrounding Barkly region.

Anyinginyi consists of five different sections covering a wide array of services such as clinical care and social and emotional well being, health promotions, sports and active lifestyle and administrative services. This diversity allows for a holistic approach to health, ensuring that clients' physical and emotional health and well-being is given the utmost priority.

Anyinginyi health service delivery area stretches north of Tennant Creek to Elliott, across to the east, almost to the QLD border and south to Ali Curung - almost 150,000 square km.

About the Opportunity 

Anyinginyi now has an opportunity for a Registered Nurse to join their team as a Diabetes Educator. This is a full-time role based in Tennant Creek, NT. It is initially being offered on a 1-2 year contract basis, with extension likely for the right person, subject to funding. 

Reporting to the Practice Nurse Manager, the Diabetes Educator is responsible for providing high-quality, holistic primary health services, with a specific focus on Diabetes prevention, education and treatment, in the Barkly region. You will work as part of a multi-disciplinary team with the aim to improve health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with chronic health conditions through better access to coordinated and multidisciplinary care.

More specifically, some of your duties will include but not be limited to:

  • Identifying and maintaining a register of all people within Anyinginyi's service delivery area with diabetes;
  • Providing high-quality nursing care, diabetes education and healthy living education to individuals with diabetes, their families and their support networks;
  • Participating in dealing with issues affecting the social and emotional wellbeing of the community in line and associated with diabetes activities;
  • Initiating and participating in health promotion activities aimed at individual and population health preventative initiatives, ensuring all program material and content is up to date, appropriate, relevant and engaging.

About You

To be considered for this position you will be an AHPRA Registered Nurse with a graduate certificate in Diabetes Education and/or relevant experience providing clinical care and education to individuals with diabetes. Any experience living or working in a remote area and/or working within an Aboriginal controlled primary health care service, will be highly regarded. 

Key to your success will be an understanding of the primary health care system and issues relevant to closing the gap in health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, including the ability to communicate and support the delivery of culturally responsive programs and services.

You will be a confident communicator with the ability to conduct 1-on-1 and group sessions to educate clients and staff on best practice for diabetes health management, and you will be innovative in your response to the changing health needs of Aboriginal clients, with a willingness to incorporate local values and protocols in wellbeing programs and services.

Please note: Prior to commencement you will need to undergo a National Police Clearance and obtain a current Ochre Card. A Driver's License and the ability to drive to communities as required, is also essential for this role.
