Doomadgee Aboriginal Shire Council, formerly known as an Aboriginal Community Council, is the local government provider in the Doomadgee region.

Doomadgee is a largely Indigenous community located in the Gulf of Carpentaria, approximately 140km from the Northern Territory border and 93km west of Burketown. The community is positioned alongside the Nicholson River and provides access to the coast, freshwater rivers and Lawn Hill National Park, one of the Gulf’s most popular natural tourist attractions.

The community is well resourced with a retail store, schools from preschool through to secondary, a hospital and plenty of accommodation facilities. 

About the Opportunity

Doomadgee Aboriginal Shire Council (Doomadgee), now has an opportunity for an Executive Support Officer to join their team on a full-time basis.

Sitting within the Corporate Services Department, the Executive Support Officer provides a high-level of professional and confidential administrative support services to the Director of Corporate Services.

Your day-to-day duties will include (but not be limited to):

  • Acting as the first point of contact for enquiries directed to the Director of Corporate Services;
  • Providing additional administrative support for the Operations Manager (Engineering) and Community Services Manager as required;
  • Reviewing funding agreements and advising of any changes; 
  • Maintaining appointment diaries and coordinating arrangements for meetings and appointments as required;
  • Maintaining department databases to ensure they are kept up to date, including the policy register;
  • Preparing agendas and taking minutes of other Council-related committees; and
  • Researching, writing and distributing a range of media items as authorised, including media releases, community announcements, fact sheets and media responses.

About You

To be considered for this position you will hold a minimum of a Certificate III in Business Administration and have demonstrated experience in a similar role, ideally as an Executive Assistant. Any experience working within Local Government and/or using Synergy software will be highly regarded but is not mandatory. 

You will have excellent administrative and organisational skills, with the ability to manage competing deadlines and maintain confidentiality and discretion when dealing with sensitive matters. You will be strategically minded, proficient in the Microsoft Office suite, and be able to comprehend and provide professional documentation and presentations as required.

Importantly, Doomadgee is looking for candidates with strong communication and interpersonal skills. You will have an understanding of cross-cultural awareness and practice and be comfortable engaging positively with Aboriginal people.
