The Lung Foundation Australia National Office employs about 21 professional/administrative staff, supported by a team of dedicated volunteers. 

About the Opportunity

Lung Foundation Australia is now seeking a Lung Cancer Support Nurse to join their Information & Support team in Milton, Brisbane. This is a permanent part-time position working 7.6 hours per day / 3 days per week.

Reporting to the General Manager of Thoracic Cancers and Rare Diseases, you will provide evidence-based support to patients, relatives, carers and health professionals over the phone, regarding their lung cancer-related queries or problems. This includes suggestions about lung cancer diagnosis, treatment and care, and referrals when appropriate.

Your duties will include (but will not be limited to):

  • Providing timely telephone assistance to consumers requesting medical support;
  • Planning and facilitating regular telephone support group meetings, liaising and networking with health professionals through the Lung cancer MDT directory;
  • Developing and maintaining key networks with lung health professionals and identifying opportunities to support lung cancer nurses in the professional care of lung cancer patients, their carers and family members; and
  • Raising awareness of LFA resources and support care services to consumers including printed and web-based resources.

About You

To be considered for this position you will be a degree qualified Registered Nurse currently registered with the Nurses Board of Australia. Demonstrated experience in Oncology Nursing is essential, while experience in Lung Cancer nursing or palliative care will be highly regarded. 

The successful candidate will have experience providing exceptional communication and interpersonal skills that will showcase your empathetic nature and assist in delivering clinical and general support to oncology patients. You will be able to navigate clinical information with expertise and deliver this information to the relevant doctors, nurses and healthcare team alike.

In addition, you will be able to work autonomously within a team environment and able to prioritise tasks and manage time effortlessly. You will exhibit a clear understanding of the demands one may face in this type of support role and will be able to demonstrate self-care to ensure sustainability and resilience.

Previous experience in information and support services/helplines and/or counselling roles will be highly regarded.
