About the Opportunity

Moree Plains Shire Council now has an exciting opportunity for a Technical Officer - Environment and Public Health to join their Planning and Community Development team. This is a full-time role based in Moree, Northern NSW, approximately 1.5 hours drive from the Queensland border.

Reporting to the Environment and Compliance Manager, Technical Officers provide technical leadership and support in the environment and public health activities of Council. With a large focus on education, a key part of your role will be to develop and implement a calendar of educational programs throughout the community, with the end goal of achieving better understanding of compliance matters and voluntary compliance.

Some of your key duties will include (but will not be limited to):

  • Working with the Manager, Environment and Compliance in the development of strategies and policies relating to the environment and compliance activities of Council;
  • Undertaking and leading other team members in the inspection, sampling, measurements and testing, as required, relevant to the environment and compliance activities of Council;
  • Reviewing and developing policy and strategies relating to environment and compliance;
  • Ensuring that when enforcement action is required, such action is taken expeditiously in conjunction with the compliance team.

About You

To be considered for this position you will hold a minimum of a Diploma in Environmental Health which demonstrates the ability to become an Authorised Officer to enable inspections, investigations and enforcement of legislation relating to public health, environment and food safety. Tertiary qualifications in Environmental Science or similar will be highly regarded.

Council is also open to accepting applications from candidates who are still studying to complete their studies, but have gained some relevant work experience in this area.

In addition, you will have demonstrated experience working in a regulatory enforcement environment and the ability to hit the ground running with the interpretation and application of legislative and regulatory instruments. 

This role would be best suited to a proactive and level-headed individual who is well-versed in conflict resolution and possesses strong communication skills, with the ability to engage confidently and patiently with a variety of stakeholders (including your team and the community). 

Importantly, you will have a genuine interest in the field and be willing and able to develop and implement education programs, presentations and materials to achieve voluntary compliance outcomes. 

Please Note: A current, manual 'C' Class Driver's License is a requirement of this position.
