About the Opportunity

Moree Plains Shire Council now has an exciting opportunity for an experienced Senior Accountant to join their Finance Section of the Corporate Service Department.  This is a full-time role based in Moree, Northern NSW.

Reporting to the Finance Manager and working closely with another Senior Accountant, this is a highly operational role that will see you responsible for day-to-day management of Council's finance operations in a way that contributes to the overall performance of the Department. You will act as a '2IC' for the finance section of the Corporate Services Department, stepping in for the Finance Manager as required, and providing leadership to 3-4 direct reports and overseeing a team of approximately 12 people.

More specifically, some of your key duties will include (but will not be limited to):

  • Directing operations of the financial services; procurement and accounts payable; and revenue and customer service teams within the Finance Department;
  • Assisting in the finalisation of year end processes and procedures and in the preparation of Council's Annual Financial Statements;
  • Ongoing review of Accounts Payable and Procurement processes with a view to recommend areas for productivity, procedural and probity improvements; and
  • Developing the Revenue Budget and Revenue Policy, consisting of ordinary rate revenue, water, sewer and waste revenues, through administering the rating system and the development of Integrated Planning, the long-term Financial Plan and the Asset Management Plan.

About You

To be considered for this position you will hold tertiary qualifications (minimum of a Bachelor's Degree) in Commerce, Accounting or similar, and have demonstrated experience in a similar role. Any experience gained within a Local Government environment will be highly regarded, but is not mandatory.

In addition, you must have demonstrated experience supervising and/or managing a team, with the ability to maintain confidentiality, tact and discretion when dealing with internal and external stakeholders. You will be comfortable working collaboratively with other members of the Finance Department, particularly the other Senior Accountant within the team.

This is a busy, multi-functional role requiring good organisational skills and the ability to solve problems using your own initiative. You will have experience with the Microsoft Office Suite (particularly Excel); computerised accounting package/s, and the ability to prioritise work with conflicting time pressures and deadlines.
