Mississauga First Nations (MFN) is located along Hwy 17, 348 km west of the city of Sudbury and 278 km east of the city of Sault Ste Marie. It is adjacent to the Town of Blind River situated along the North Shore of Lake Huron and has a staff of 97 full and part-time employees within all of its service departments and a member population of 1,120 with approximately 450 members living on-reserve.

About the Opportunity

We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Social Services Manager to join our team in Mississauga First Nation on a full-time basis. 

Reporting to the Health and Social Services Director, the Social Services Manager will be responsible for ensuring Mississauga First Nation's socially driven programs and services meet the community needs in a planned and coordinated manner.

More specifically, you will assist in the supervision of social service staff through established accountability mechanisms of the Health and Social Services Unit.

Your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Engaging the community in the development of programs and services
  • Assisting in the development and design of new programs and services responses to the identified First Nation
  • Evaluating, planning, coordinating and monitoring the development of social service programs and annual work plans
  • Cultivating partnerships with other First Nations and community organizations
  • Effectively communicating with the Health and Social Services team, First Nation citizens, committees, and all other parties in a professional manner
  • Supervising, coaching and directing Social Service staff
  • Coordinating team meetings, conducting performance reviews and promoting a positive work environment
  • Assisting in the development and implementation of the annual revision of job descriptions, salary guidelines, performance appraisals, training plans and orientation for new staff
  • Assisting in the development of training proposals responsive to identified training needs and coordinate training opportunities
  • Participating in hiring committees, internal committees/groups in support of Health and Social Services when applicable
  • Ensuring administrative and finance policies are adhered to, and effectively monitor program budgets
  • Preparing program and financial reports, briefing notes and correspondence as required
  • Preparing and submitting proposals for funding and/or enhanced services
  • Representing and actively participating, by assignment of Health and Social Services Director, in local, regional or committees/groups in support of social services to MFN

In order to qualify for this role, you will have a post-secondary education in Health, Human Services, or Public/ Business Administration plus a minimum of 1-2 years experience with a First Nation or Aboriginal organization in the area of health or social services or indirect First Nations development work.

You will also possess:

  • Experience working in a multi-disciplinary environment
  • Experience writing proposals, policies, procedures and reports
  • Experience with financial reporting, recording, budgeting, monitoring and program planning
  • A clear Vulnerable Sector Check from the Canadian Police Information Center (CPIC)
  • A Class ‘G’ Ontario Driver’s License in good standing and be able to travel
  • Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System
  • Demonstrated computer skills with MS Office software.

Strong written and verbal communication, conflict resolution and time-management skills are essential, as is the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
