About the Opportunity

Methanex is currently seeking an Electrical Technician to join the team in Medicine Hat on a full-time basis.

In this role, you will maintain, troubleshoot and repair electrical equipment, instrumentation, controls and power systems, and also design and consult on new installations, including the configuration, programming and commissioning of new systems.

This position has the potential for growth into a leadership role.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Maintaining, troubleshooting and repairing electrical equipment and systems including Uninterruptable Power Supply (UPS) and battery charger systems, electric motors, Variable Frequency Drives (VFD), Motor Operated Valves (MOV), and Low and High voltage switchgear
  • Completing general maintenance and basic programming of Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) and Distributed Control Systems (DCS)
  • Performing preventative maintenance inspections on critical equipment and systems
  • Maintaining calibration records for all critical equipment
  • Assisting team members from the Technical department in the development of designs for new and upgraded systems, as well as supporting the installation and participating in the commissioning of new equipment
  • Acting as the designated legislative compliance contact for the Canadian Electric Code which includes responsibility for ensuring compliance and communicating changes and updates to the site
  • Liaising with the municipal Electrical Inspector, as required, and maintain current knowledge of municipal standards related to electrical systems
  • Participating in audits of the site Electrical Safety Program
  • Participating as a member of the team to ensure policies and procedures are followed and best practices are implemented
  • Participating in the response to plant emergency situations, including after-hours events, as required

In order to qualify for this role, you will have a trade certification as a Journeyperson Electrician combined with a minimum of 8 years of progressive experience in an industrial environment. 

A Red Seal or Master Electrician certification is preferred and a post-secondary diploma in Electrical Engineering Technology and trade certification as a Journeyperson Instrument Technician are assets.

You will also possess:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of general UPS systems, back-up generators, motors, switch gear and other electrical equipment, including comprehension of complex control systems
  • Working knowledge of Delta V DCS, and proficiency programming and troubleshooting Modicon PLC
  • Skilled in the use of specialized multimeters and test equipment
  • Current knowledge of the Canadian Electric Code
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office suite of programs and web-based applications
  • Previous exposure to Maximo, AutoCAD, Autodesk True View, and Fluke Smartview Thermographic imaging (Asset)
  • Proficiency in reading P&IDs, loop drawings, data sheets and electrical diagrams is an asset, as is knowledge of general instrumentation, valves, and infrared thermography
  • Exceptional critical thinking, decision making and troubleshooting skills, based on sound judgment and a demonstrated ability to make valuable decisions based on a mixture of analysis, wisdom and experience, including the ability to exercise appropriate discretion in discontinuing work when safety may be compromised
