About the Organisation

Tamworth Aboriginal Medical Service (TAMS) is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation that delivers culturally appropriate health services to residents from Tamworth and the district. Services and programs include:

  • General medicine practice
  • SEWB programs
  • Drug and Alcohol programs
  • Medical Specialists including ENT, Cardiology, Diabetes Educators, and Psychologists
  • Access and support
  • Chronic disease education and management

TAMS aims to empower Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to take control of their individual, family and community health and wellbeing needs, improving their health care outcomes.

About the Opportunity

TAMS now has a rare and exciting opportunity for a Chief Executive Officer to join their team in Tamworth, NSW on a full-time basis. 

This is an identified position. Being Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander is a genuine occupational qualification as specified under section 14D of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977 (NSW). 

Reporting to the TAMS Board, your primary responsibility will be the continued development, implementation and progression of the Medical Service through effective good governance, leadership, management and comprehensive planning from an operational to a strategic level.

Some of your key duties will include (but will not be limited to):

  • Managing the day to day operations of the organisation, ensuring compliance with relevant legislation;
  • Providing leadership and operational supervision of staff and visiting specialists;
  • Ensuring the efficient and effective administration of services, including budgetary and financial systems, administration systems, information technology and human resource processes;
  • Resourcing and supporting the governing body with necessary information, reports and advice to fulfil its roles and responsibilities;
  • Developing strategic and operational plans in consultation with the Board and managing implementation of these plans;
  • Actively encouraging continuous improvement, with a focus on organisational growth; and
  • Developing strong relationships with key stakeholders and holding a presence at a local, state and national level.

About You

The successful candidate will hold relevant tertiary qualifications, along with previous experience working at a CEO or senior executive level. An understanding of how a Community Controlled Organisation operates will be crucial, while a background in healthcare will be highly regarded.

Due to the nature of the role, TAMS is seeking someone with strong business acumen and a growth mindset. An understanding of Accounting practices and principles, as well as the ability to interpret and implement legislation, will also be required.

It's essential you have a strong management background and excellent team leadership skills. You'll be the type of leader who motivates and inspires their team to achieve success, by taking them on the wider business journey alongside yourself.

Importantly, you'll have an understanding of Aboriginal culture and a strong ethical responsibility to drive and implement programs to better the Aboriginal community. Acting as the face of the organisation at a local, state and national level, it is essential you have excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to engage with stakeholders of all levels.
