About the Organisation

Cairns Regional Domestic Violence Service Inc. (CRDVS) aims to use its specialist knowledge and skills to prevent domestic and family violence in the community and to empower those affected by it. 

CRDVS's vision is "Making a difference – bringing domestic and family violence to an end".  We seek to do this by providing a comprehensive and client centred quality service to all vulnerable clients. The organisation provides a confidential and free service for family members who have experienced, or are currently experiencing, domestic and family violence. CRDVS will at all times strive to uphold high levels of professionalism and accountability.

The service is staffed by a close-knit team of qualified professionals with experience in adult and child counselling, court support and training.

About the Opportunity

Cairns Regional Domestic Violence Service (CRDVS) has a rewarding part-time opportunity for an experienced Community Education/Intake Worker to join their team in Cairns, working approximately 30 hours per week.

In this role, you will provide quality education and training services to the community including schools, businesses, and professionals working with victims and child witnesses who have experienced domestic violence.

Additionally, a key element of this role will see you responsible for providing confidential and appropriate telephone and front counter information, intake and risk assessment, referrals and crisis counselling for clients as required ensuring victims in crisis receive a timely service. 

More specifically, your duties will include (but not be limited to):

  • Working with the CRDVS team to enhance greater community awareness of domestic violence by developing, coordinating and facilitating community education programmes;
  • Developing, planning and facilitating the implementation of appropriate training programmes;
  • Providing crisis assistance, risk assessment and safety planning, information and referral to victims of domestic violence, working under general supervision and within the guidelines of relevant legislation;
  • Liaising with government and non-government organisations regarding education and training related matters in order to develop professional networks;
  • Researching, developing and maintaining professional and client resources for education and training purposes as well as for use in the organisation; and
  • Developing, editing and publishing a bi-yearly information/education/training newsletter and maintaining the service's social media site.

To be successful in this role, you must have completed an undergraduate degree in Psychology, Social Work, Community Welfare, Education, or similar. 

You will also have experience in preparing and delivering educational/training materials and the ability to implement, effective and inclusive learning processes for the individual needs of learners and groups of learners. 

In addition to providing information and training, it is essential that you have the ability to handle crisis calls. As such, you will need to have exceptional interpersonal and verbal communication skills, resilience, and strong analytical skills.

Successful applicants will also need to have a demonstrated understanding of the effects and causes of domestic violence, including knowledge of cultural differences and needs. 

Candidates who are working towards completion of a relevant degree-level qualification and have demonstrated experience in a similar position will also be considered.

CRDVS is looking for an experienced individual, preferably with experience in the Domestic and Family Violence or Sexual Assault sector, with a high level of written and computer literacy skills (including Microsoft Office) who can work cooperatively within a team environment.
