About the Organization

Since 1979, The Legal Services Society (LSS) has been the provider of legal aid in British Columbia. As a non-profit organization, our goal is to provide legal information, advice, and representation services to some of BC's most vulnerable and marginalized citizens: those who do not have the financial, educational, social or health resources to effectively access the justice system when their families, freedom, or safety are at risk. Many of our services are also available to all British Columbians and our scope of work includes family law, child protection, immigration, and criminal law. 

Our mandate is to:

  • Help people to solve their legal problems and to facilitate access to justice
  • Establish and administer an effective and efficient system for providing legal aid to people in BC
  • Provide advice to the Attorney General about legal aid and access to justice for people in BC

About the Opportunity

LSS currently has an exciting career opportunity for a Business Intelligence Analyst to join our team in Vancouver, British Columbia.

In this pivotal role, you will be planning, researching, producing, analyzing and documenting statistical and financial reports from the Society’s management information system database.

More specifically, you will be supporting management research, planning and policy decisions and helping to develop reporting solutions like scorecards, dashboards, reports, etc.

Key accountabilities include, but aren't limited to:

  • Working directly with business users to gather requirements, and with the Business Intelligence Developer and Supervisor, Business Intelligence, to write reports and design solutions
  • Analyzing complex data to build and write concise reports for internal and external users
  • Writing reports using business intelligence tools to respond to user requests on an ad hoc basis
  • Using MicroStrategy to develop reporting solutions like scorecards, dashboards, reports, OLAP analysis
  • Defining reporting standards for all business intelligence tools
  • Presenting data to users in clear and appealing ways that enable users to understand the data and answer business questions, including using visualizations
  • Creating and delivering training to end users, including training guides, documentation and presentations.
  • Providing input into and maintenance of the centralized reporting strategy for the Society
  • Maintaining and adjusting existing reports as business requirements change
  • Recommending system changes and identifying data integrity issues to improve the quality and availability of data for management decision-making
  • Using MicroStrategy and other business intelligence tools to design and build reports, develop cubes and dashboards to support business initiatives
  • Analyzing and designing BI front-end applications according to user requirements
  • Administering the business intelligence tools to manage user licenses, set preferences and oversee its maintenance
  • Developing business knowledge and relationships with business users to understand and recognize their business intelligence requirements
  • Collaborating with IT in identifying solutions and delivering information services to LSS
  • Continuously maintaining knowledge of business intelligence best practices
  • Performing testing and documenting BI solutions

The Ideal Candidate

The successful candidate for this role will have a Diploma or Bachelor's Degree in computer sciences, commerce, business administration or a related discipline from an accredited university or technical school and a minimum of 3 years of business intelligence/reporting experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. 

You will also have excellent financial acumen and advanced working knowledge of reporting systems (such as SQL Server Reporting Services, Crystal Reports and/or Microstrategy). Similarly, an advanced skill with Microsoft Excel will be key to success in this role. 

You will also possess:

  • Ability to write technical reports using standard writing procedures, techniques, and composition
  • Ability to write to build complex queries and use business intelligence software to create data reports
  • Ability to understand business requirements and apply them to existing and new reporting functions
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
  • Ability to research collect, organize, and analyze data, and report on financial and statistical information
  • Ability to present data to users in ways that help users to understand the data, including using visualizations
  • Ability to interview users and elicit information for business requirements
  • Working experience with Microstrategy and SSIS is an asset
  • Experience with MS SQL Server is an asset
  • Experience in Dimensional modelling is an asset
  • Knowledge of Legal Services Society policies and procedures an asset
