About The Nuclear Innovation Institute (Skilled Trade Secretariat)

In May 2018, Bruce Power and the County of Bruce announced a new partnership to establish Ontario’s Nuclear Innovation Institute in Bruce County. The NII will bring together technological leaders to share collective expertise and knowledge, while identifying opportunities to advance nuclear applications and technologies, as well as people skills through training. One of the three key functions for the NII, is a Skilled Trades Secretariat. The Skilled Trades Secretariat, consists of industry leaders coordinating and increasing employment in the skilled trades in support of building a strong, sustainable regional labour force. Centered on partnerships with education, labour unions and the government, the Secretariat works to collaboratively address regional and sectoral needs in the labour market and increase participation in underrepresented groups.

The Nuclear Innovation Institute is located in Bruce County within two hours of Ontario's major urban centers. About the Opportunity

The Nuclear Innovation Institute is currently seeking a Talent Development Officer to join our team in Walkerton, Ontario (temporary location – office to be established in Saugeen Shores area). This is a full time one year contract with the possibility of further extension.

Reporting to the Director of Planning and Development, you will develop and execute a strategy to establish a collaborative mechanism for maximizing training programs and capitalizing on local assets, to increase the supply of high-demand skilled trades locally.

More specifically, under the strategic direction provided by the Talent Development Committee, you will be responsible for coordinating and organizing the Secretariat’s function.

Key duties include, but aren't limited to: 

  • Developing and executing an engagement strategy for high demand skilled trades occupations, to understanding existing assets, address skilled trades demand, provide coordinated training opportunities and identify partnerships with key stakeholders in support of this initiative
  • Growing and expanding the Skilled Trades Secretariat’s collaboration network (partnership) across our region, marketing its value proposition to relevant audiences – defining partner expectations and meeting their needs; while also, building on and utilizing the capabilities of partner organizations
  • Linking industrial development and employment opportunities, recruitment and training of local skilled workers, and advancement of industry expansion to support existing enterprises
  • Researching, identifying and providing recommendations on skilled trades pathways, career development and training opportunities to the Talent Development Committee
  • Developing the resources and benefits which the Skilled Trades Secretariat provides to its stakeholders
  • Supporting and participating in skilled trades/labour committees and forums, developing positive working relationships and partnerships, while sharing information and resources
  • Acting as a liaison between key stakeholders, including; industry, government, unions, training institutions, labour groups, school boards and other related groups
  • Providing a wide range of administrative and logistical support

To qualify for this role, you must have a post-secondary education in a related field with a minimum of 5 years experience in a related role. 

Our ideal candidate will also possess the following: 

  • Experience in labour market, skilled trades, training and employment, labour relations, and knowledge of the nuclear industry (nuclear expertise an asset)
  • Record of effective relationship-building and administration of an organization with multiple stakeholders
  • Previous effective leadership in a complex environment with a track record accomplishing results through facilitation, consensus building, and timely action
  • The ability to work independently as well as co-operatively as a member of a team to help develop and deliver all facets of the Skilled Trades Secretariat mandate and engagement strategy
  • Engaging interpersonal skills, specifically outgoing personality to meet with and grow partnerships and earn the confidence of all stakeholders
  • Excellent communication (written/verbal), presentation/public speaking skills.

To be successful in this role, you will demonstrate strong attention to detail, a commitment to health and safety, cultural sensitivity and the ability to use sound reasoning when faced with various issues.  

Finally, you will need to be results-orientated, resourceful, have good time-management skills and be able to break down a situation into smaller pieces to identify key issues and figure out cause and effect relationships in order to solve problems.
