About the Organisation

Anyinginyi Health Aboriginal Corporation (Anyinginyi) is a multi-disciplinary organisation which provides primary health care services to the Aboriginal people of Tennant Creek and the surrounding Barkly region.

Anyinginyi consists of five different sections covering a wide array of services such as clinical care and social and emotional well being, health promotions, sports and active lifestyle and administrative services. This diversity allows for a holistic approach to health, ensuring that clients' physical and emotional health and well-being is given the utmost priority.

Anyinginyi health service delivery area stretches north of Tennant Creek to Elliott, across to the east, almost to the QLD border and south to Ali Curung - almost 150,000 square km.

About the Opportunity

Anyinginyi now has an opportunity for a Tackling Indigenous Smoking (TIS) Education Officer to join their team in Tennant Creek, NT. This position is being offered on a full-time, 2 year contract basis, with extension subject to funding.

The aim of the Tackling Indigenous Smoking (TIS) program is to contribute to closing the gap in Indigenous health outcomes by reducing tobacco smoking as the most significant risk factor for chronic disease among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples.

In consultation with the community, you will be part of a small team responsible for developing, promoting and undertaking a range of supportive, evidence based resources and activities aimed to reduce the uptake of smoking, to promote smoke-free spaces, and supporting smoking cessation in Aboriginal communities within the Barkly Region.

More specifically, some of your key duties will include (but will not be limited to):

  • Supporting ongoing development, coordination and facilitation of positive engagement, interventions and activities in accordance with the TIS program guidelines;
  • Proactively supporting the development of sustainable and respectful networks to build community support for the program;
  • Working with the National Best Practice Unit (NBPU) to identify, develop and assist in the delivery of responsive smoking prevention and cessation social marketing campaigns
  • Ensuring all program material and content is up to date, appropriate, relevant and engaging for the target audience; and
  • Collaborating with key stakeholders (including community, government and not-for-profit agencies) representing and advocating for Anyinginyi and the TIS program.

About You

To be considered for this position you will hold a minimum qualification of a Cert 4 in a relevant discipline, as well as a background working within the community sector.

Acting as the face of the TIS program, it's crucial you be articulate and well presented, with excellent engagement skills. Confidence in your ability to develop, implement and facilitate localised, innovative public engagement strategies (inclusive of digital campaigns) will be essential.

Experience in planning, tracking, reporting on and evaluating projects that have specified deliverables will also aid you in this role, as will competency in the use of computer programs.

Due to the nature of the role, it's important you are committed to promoting a non-smoking lifestyle and can act as a role model within the community. Anyinginyi is looking for someone with strong interpersonal and cross-cultural communication skills, along with sound knowledge and understanding of the Primary Health Care system and issues impacting the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Experience working within Aboriginal community health or welfare services will ensure your ability to adapt and socialise in a culturally sensitive manner.

Please note: In addition to the above skills and experience, the successful candidate must either hold or be willing to obtain National Police Clearance, Working with Children Clearance (OCHRE Card) and a current Driver's License prior to commencing employment.
