About the Opportunity

Burke Shire Council has a rewarding opportunity for a Finance Officer to join their supportive and dedicated Financial Services Team, located in Cairns, on a full-time basis.

In this role you will be primarily responsible for providing assistance with the core accounting functions with the main focus on accounts payable but also including some accounts receivable, and general administrative duties as required. 

Day-to-day duties may include (but will not be limited to):

  • Raising Purchase Orders and ensuring they are in accordance with council policy and legislation;
  • Performing and assisting with reconciliations of supplier/vendor accounts, monthly credit cards, daily banking and end of month/year documentation. 
  • Ensuring all accounts payable documentation is filed;
  • Providing reports as requested by senior finance staff eg. transaction history and year-to-date expenditure reports;
  • Reviewing accounts payable transactions and audit trails;
  • Maintaining registers including setting up employees, updating contract details, updating tax scales and updating deductions and allowances;

About You

To be considered for this position you will have experience in a similar position and demonstrated understanding of Accounting and Financial Services. Qualifications in Accounting or similar relevant discipline will be viewed favourably but are not essential.

This role would be well suited to someone with well-rounded accounting knowledge who is motivated to continue to grow and develop their skill set.

Burke Shire Council is looking for an individual with strong communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to prioritise and meet deadlines. You will have extremely high attention to detail and be proficient with all Microsoft Office programs, particularly Microsoft Excel. 

Proficiency with Civica Practical Plus (PCS) and Synergy Accounting System, will be very advantageous though not essential as full training will be provided.

Please Note: While not essential, Local Government experience will be highly regarded.
