About the Organization

The Nisga'a Lisims Government (NLG) building opened its doors in 2000, and has since been responsible for a vital set of functions carried out under various departments including Finance, Programs & Services, Fisheries & Wildlife, and Lands & Resources, all which contribute to the development of the surrounding area. NLG's directives are governed under Nisga’a laws as well as federal and provincial laws.

About the Location

Located on BC's rugged northwest coast, 100 to 150km north of Terrace, Nisga'a Lands are blessed with soaring mountains, dramatic lava beds, picturesque fjords, and thriving rivers and streams. The natural beauty of Nisga'a Lands are also complemented by the Nisga'a Nation's rich cultural traditions. Gitlaxt'aamiks (also known as New Aiyansh), is considered the "capital of the Nisga'a Nation" and is one of the four Nisga'a villages located in the beautiful Nass Valley which include Gitwinksihlkw, Laxgalts’ap and Gingolx.  

About the Opportunity

NLG is currently seeking an Aboriginal Child Youth Mental Health Clinician to join their team and be based in Gitlaxt'aamiks in beautiful British Columbia. You will also work with and travel between the other three Nisga'a communities of Gitwinksihlkw, Laxgalts’ap and Gingolx. 

This is an ideal opportunity for someone with First Nations and child counselling experience, who is passionate about making a difference to the lives of others.    

As part of the child protection team, you will work with children of all ages. Such issues may include mental health, trauma, and/or family dysfunction for which you will also develop and implement a range of therapeutic treatments including expressive play and art therapy. You will also be supported by a clinical supervisor.  

This is a challenging, dynamic and rewarding role that will see you:  

  • Interview clients to obtain pertinent information, including social history, treatments, etc; 
  • Observe clients to detect indications of abnormal physical or mental behavior; 
  • Review the results of tests given by psychologists to evaluate individual needs; 
  • Plan and administer therapeutic treatments, including behavior modifications and stress management therapy;  
  • Maintain regular contact with other agencies/professionals regarding client progress and resource opportunities in the therapeutic treatment program; 
  • Consult with psychologists/psychiatrists and other specialists regarding treatment plans and make amendments, as required; 
  • Refer residents to other services to supplement treatment and counseling; 
  • Conduct group therapy and/or individual therapy sessions; 
  • Complete and maintain all individual and group counseling notes and documentation; 
  • Complete all court reports in a timely manner; 
  • Develop and implement appropriate discharge planning;  
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with internal and external community members, families, clients and other employees; and
  • Maintain a high level of professionalism inside and outside of work hours. 

To succeed in this role, the successful candidates must have superior communication, analytical and reasoning abilities, as well as:   

  • A Masters Degree in Social Work (MSW), Counselling, Psychology or equivalent;
  • At least 5 years of experience in a counselling role, with 2-3 years of experience working directly with children of all ages;
  • A strong knowledge of aboriginal frameworks 
  • Registration with an appropriate regulatory body (e.g. R.S.W.) with appropriate liability insurance; and 
  • A valid Driver’s License and access to a reliable vehicle with appropriate liability insurance.  

This role is best suited to an outside of the box thinker who can take traditional therapy methods and apply them to aboriginal frameworks and cultures to ensure that each child receives the best care possible. 

Preference may be given to candidates with demonstrated ability in the field of family counselling and who are eligible for clinical membership with APA or CPA (American or Canadian Psychology Associations).
