About the Organisation

Burke Shire sits at the base of the Gulf of Carpentaria, nestled alongside the Northern Territory Border.  Home to approx. 550 people, the Shire is administered out of Burketown, approximately 400 km north of Mount Isa.  The Shire boasts many world class natural attractions (including Riversleigh fossil fields and Boodjamulla National Park) an abundance of wildlife, barramundi and crocodiles.  

To build upon the region’s potential, Council has established an administrative department, including financial and human resources to service Council, based in Cairns. 

About the Opportunity

Burke Shire Council now has a fantastic opportunity for a Human Resources & Workforce Development Coordinator to join their team based in Cairns. This is a 12 month contract position, with potential for extension after this time. Hours are part-time (approximately 21.75 hours per week), with Council open to discussing days and hours with the successful candidate. 

Reporting to the Executive Manager, Corporate and Community Services, this position coordinates human resource governance to support Burke Shire Council to be an Employer of Choice, with a workplace culture that fosters high morale and job satisfaction.

The position has dual operational and strategic functions, however there will be a growing focus on the delivery of strategic human resource management activities, including the provision of quality advice, information and recommendations to the Executive Management Team (EMT) regarding human resource practices.

Your day-to-day responsibilities will include (but not be limited to):

  • Monitoring, advising and reporting on current and relevant legislative matters, including providing advice on award interpretation and its effect on Council operations;
  • Taking the lead role in the identification, development, implementation and evaluation of HR initiatives across council including policy and compliance, and supporting change management initiatives;
  • Working with management and staff to identify ways to improve and enhance job satisfaction, professional development and training, and multi-skilling; and
  • Providing support to line managers on HR matters including staff recruitment, retention and performance review programs.

This position would be well-suited to a HR professional with some demonstrated experience under their belt, who is interested in a role that offers autonomy, variety and career growth opportunities, whilst still giving you the flexibility to pursue commitments outside of work.

About You

To be considered for this position, you will hold considerable experience in a human resource capacity with demonstrated knowledge of all HR functional areas including employee relations, certified agreement negotiations, recruitment and human resource management operations.

Ideally, you will hold specific experience gained within Local Government, however - Council is open to speaking to candidates who don't hold Local Government experience, providing they have a strong background in industrial relations, with an understanding of, and ability to interpret legislation and industrial agreements. 

You will be a confident communicator, with good time management, negotiation and collaboration skills, in order to provide the best possible support and advice to line Managers and the EMT. You will have a commitment to workforce development practices that encourage continual learning, career pathways and professional development.
