About the Opportunity

Methanex is currently seeking a Mechanical/Project Engineer to join the team in Medicine Hat on a permanent full-time basis.

In this role, you will facilitate the design and development of projects and technical reports from a mechanical perspective, ensuring the quality, integrity, safety and regulatory compliance of projects. 

In addition, you will prepare and modify mechanical designs, and provide support and troubleshooting assistance for site activities and plant mechanical issues.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Managing complex multi-discipline technical projects that relate to piping, vessels, rotating equipment and other mechanical equipment
  • Utilizing the Management of Change (MOC) procedure to coordinate and advance a project from request through closeout
  • Applying Process Safety elements in engineering designs
  • Preparing, reviewing and maintaining mechanical standards and specifications for projects
  • Managing contract engineering services related to mechanical modifications and upgrades
  • Providing mechanical and piping designs for high-risk modifications and upgrades made to the plant
  • Supporting materials selection to minimize costs and maximize facility reliability and maintainability
  • Supporting Maintenance and Operations departments in regard to emergency changes and equipment maintenance issues
  • Revising priorities on an on-going basis in response to plant and project needs
  • Collaborating with the Technical team in developing and actioning the annual department plan; ensuring individual activities align with Medicine Hat business plan and Corporate Strategy

In order to qualify for this role, you will have an Undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering combined with a Project Management Professional (PMP) designation.

You will also possess:

  • Eligibility for membership with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA); ability to be registered as an Engineer in Training (EIT) or Professional Engineer (P.Eng) 
  • Seven to ten years’ experience in mechanical engineering preferred
  • Five to seven years’ experience with project management preferred
  • Previous construction experience an asset

With strong written and verbal communication and listening skills, you will possess the ability to quickly identify and directly address issues, as well as independently respond to highly complex matters in a professional manner, with guidance required in only the most unique and complicated situations. 

A strong attention to detail, exceptional organizational, prioritization and time management skills are essential, as is the ability to respond to shifting priorities and deal effectively with ambiguity.
