Edmund Rice Education Australia Wollemi Flexi Schools Network is a network of flexible learning centres that offer young people an opportunity to reconnect with education in a setting that is non-judgemental, inclusive and flexible. With a focus on literacy and numeracy, all programming and learning is developed based on young people’s individual learning plans which are customised based on learning levels and what they require to re-engage.
The Mount Isa Flexible Learning Centre is a coeducational Catholic school in the Edmund Rice tradition under the Wollemi Flexi Schools Network. It has a clear commitment to social justice and stands in solidarity with disadvantaged young people of all social, cultural and religious backgrounds, with a particular sensitivity to Indigenous culture. The school provides holistic learning experiences that address the social needs of students, and promotes their emotional, cognitive, spiritual and academic development.
The Flexible Learning Centre operates under the principles of Respect, Participation, Honesty, and Safe and Legal. These principles represent broad directions for group practice and establish a common ethical framework that promotes appropriate learning and personal relationships.
About the Opportunities
Due to ongoing growth, Wollemi Flexi Schools Network now has three, newly created opportunities at their Mount Isa Flexible Learning Centre:
1 x Teacher (full-time)
2 x Teachers' Aides (part-time, term time, 5 days per week, 4 hours per day)
All positions are being offered on a 2 year, fixed-term contract basis with the potential to extend after this time.
Wollemi is a small secondary school, the majority of which are from Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander backgrounds. The school provides personalised learning plans and teaching programs to secondary aged students who have disengaged from mainstream education. It encourages a learning experience which provides students with the opportunity to achieve their individual potential, catering to their particular literacy and numeracy levels.
Key to all of these positions will be the ability to create (Teacher) and support (Teacher Aide), the implementation of learning programs that are engaging; socially inclusive; and develop cultural links, community and family connections of the young people to the wider community.
About You
Teacher:
Candidates interested in the Teacher position will need to have experience in either Primary or Secondary education, hold, or have the ability to obtain, Queensland College of Teachers registration and hold a current 'C' class Drivers License.
As you will be designing and delivering various learning programs, it is crucial you have effective program delivery skills, along with high level communication skills; you'll be able to engage students of different backgrounds and create plans that will be most effective in terms of supporting individual youth's abilities. It is also essential you understand and be happy to work within an environment where young people have an equal voice in the school.
A dedication to providing effective teaching strategies to cater for the cultural and behavioural needs of your students will be key, as will flexibility and adaptability in your approach to overcoming challenging situations. Your creativity will also aid you in creating innovative programs and lessons that will re-engage your students and reinvigorate their love for learning!
Importantly, you will always strive to promote the school's principles in a positive manner, and use effective strategies to monitor student motivation, engagement and morale.
Teacher Aide:
It is preferred that candidates interested in the Teacher Aide positions will hold a minimum of a Certificate III in Education Support. Any experience working with children with high social and/or emotional needs would be highly regarded.
You will be well-organised to provide support to the Teacher as required across all elements of the learning programs, and you will demonstrate resilience and empathy when dealing with young people enrolled at the FLC, with the ability to provide respect for their confidentiality as well as tact, reliability and sensitivity when communicating with young people and their families.
Please note: Prior to commencement all successful candidates must hold or have the ability to apply for a Working with Children Check, Blue Card and hold a current 'C' class Drivers License.

Mount Isa FLC will provide an attractive remuneration package for each position, dependent on qualifications, skills and experience and in line with the Catholic Employing Authorities Single Enterprise Collective Agreement 2015-2019. The teaching position will be based on the Teaching schedule and the Teacher Aides based on the School Officer schedule starting at $29.93 per hour.
In addition, all positions will have the ability to access salary sacrificing options and applicable allowances as listed in our Enterprise Bargaining Agreement.
The successful candidate in the Teaching position will also be provided with rental and relocation assistance if relocating to Mount Isa from another region.
