About the Opportunity

Mainland Machinery is looking for an experienced and qualified Steel Detailer/Drafter to join their team in Abbotsford, British Columbia on a full-time basis.

In this role, you will be responsible for preparing detailed shop drawings for steel fabricators and installers to aid in the efficient manufacturing of structures, machinery and mechanical equipment. 

More specifically your duties will also include:

  • Developing detailed shop drawings, specifications and Bill of Materials for industrial products and mechanical equipment using computer-assisted drafting (CAD) software in accordance with industry and company’s standards and procedures 
  • Producing three-dimensional models, using computer-aided design (CAD) software
  • Laying out and drawing schematic, orthographic projections, or angle views to depict functional relationships of components, assemblies, systems, and machines
  • Modifying and revising designs to correct operating deficiencies or to reduce production problems
  • Reviewing and analyzing specifications, sketches, drawings, ideas, and related data to assess factors affecting components design, procedures, and instructions to be followed
  • Computing mathematical formulas to develop and design detailed specifications for components or machinery, using computer-assisted equipment
  • Coordinating and developing changes of the shop drawings/BOMs ensure proper procedures have been followed during implementation of updated documentation
  • Assisting other drafters, technologists, and technicians as needed
  • Taking part in developing reference manuals and technical publications to describe the operation and maintenance of mechanical systems
  • Performing necessary field measurements to obtain accurate information for designs
  • Adhering to the company’s Health & Safety and Professional Conduct policies
  • Additional duties as assigned

In order to qualify for this role, you will have a drafting diploma, experience with 3D modelling using SolidWorks and Inventor and at least five (5) years’ experience producing technical shop drawings.

Our ideal candidate will also possess the following:

  • Knowledge and ability to work with MS Office Suite of products (Word, Excel) 
  • Knowledge of drafting standards, mathematics, science, and engineering technology 
  • Ability to interact effectively with staff at all levels
  • Availability and the ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously
  • Availability and ability to travel to client sites on occasions
  • Availability and ability to work overtime as needed based on project requirements 

Individuals with excellent timekeeping skills who know how to work on and prioritize multiple different projects at once will excel in this role. Equally, those who demonstrate the ability to go above and beyond the call of duty to contribute to the company's overall success will have an advantage.
