About the Opportunity

Currently, the Dzawada’enuxw First Nation (DFN) is looking for a dynamic School Teacher to lead our K-7 Band Operated School in Kingcome Inlet, BC. 

Reporting to the DFN Administrator, the Lead Teacher will be responsible for the education program and delivery for up to eight students. 

With support from the DFN Administrator, the Lead Teacher will assess students and provide guidance and instructions to them while also developing individual education plans, lesson plans, and relevant curriculum; as well as managing teaching staff.

More specifically your responsibilities as Lead Teacher will include:

  • Managing the school following the relevant Ministry of Education and Indigenous Services Canada guidelines and in accordance with the educational vision of the Dzawada’enuxw First Nation. 
  • Managing the teaching staff including professional development, providing evaluations, etc. 
  • Preparing, teaching, and assessing K5 to Grade 7 academic subjects on par with the B.C. curriculum. 
  • Incorporating First Nation cultural knowledge and activities into the curriculum and classroom teaching in collaboration with the Language and Cultural teacher.
  • Preparing and updating individual education plans. 
  • Participating in ongoing professional development through the First Nations Education Steering Committee and the First Nations Schools Association.
  • Having experience with or the willingness to learn and use the Saxon Math Program, Read Well Program, Reading Mastery Program, DIBELS Assessment, CAT 4 Assessment, and the Virtues Project.
  • Extending learning into the outdoors by having students participate in programs such as the Salmon Release, Butterfly Release, Kilometer Club, and the Garden Club.
  • Fundraising for and subsequently taking the class on their annual field trip out of the community.

In order to qualify for this role, you will need a British Columbia Teaching Certificate coupled with experience managing and teaching a multi-grade, multi-level class and excellent leadership skills. Knowledge of First Nations culture and experience with First Nations students is an asset. 

As our ideal candidate for this role, you will have knowledge of culturally responsive teaching practices. In addition, you will have excellent computer literacy along with special education training or experience working with students with special needs.
