About the Organisation

Mala'la Health Service Aboriginal Corporation (MHSAC) is an incorporated community controlled Aboriginal organisation that provides primary health care services and programs to the Maningrida region. MHSAC provides funding to the Maningrida health clinic and the Mala’la Flexible Aged Care Centre, alongside providing the “GREAT” Youth Services program and the Social and Emotional Wellbeing program to the community.

MHSAC’s vision is to improve the health and well-being of their people in the Maningrida community and surrounding outstations.

About the Opportunity

MHSAC now has an opportunity for a full-time Manager, Community Wellness to join their dedicated team in Maningrida, NT.

Reporting to the CEO, this autonomous role will see you supervising and managing all staff employed within the Community Wellness Program, with the goal of enhancing the mental health and wellbeing of individuals and families within the community.

Some of your key responsibilities will include (but will not be limited to):

  • Overseeing the development and review of the Community Wellness Strategic and Operation Plans;
  • Ensuring Aboriginal values, cultural knowledge and traditions have a prominent place in the development of the Community Wellness team;
  • Delivering evidence based practices aimed at improving outcomes across family counselling, suicide intervention, alcohol and drug addiction, etc.;
  • Integrating mainstream practices in therapy and counselling with local cultural healing practices;
  • Developing inter-agency and intra-agency networks and a range of local relationships that encourage a community voice in the development of programs to support community wellbeing; and
  • Identifying and advocating for new and innovative methods of the development of future programs that best meet the need of the Maningrida community.

About You

The successful candidate will hold appropriate tertiary qualifications in Counselling, Social Work, Therapeutic Services, Psychology or similar. Well developed counselling skills and a background in developing therapeutic approaches to cross cultural work is required.

Experience within an Aboriginal community and/or remote area context will be highly regarded, as this will enable you to build on current program deliverables and outcomes. The principles of community engagement and community development will be core to your approach in managing the Program.

As you will be leading a small team, you must possess leadership experience within a clinical setting, including the management of counselling and support programs aimed at enhancing the wellbeing of individuals and families. The ability to work independently as well as part of a collaborative team will be crucial, as will excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

As you will be responsible for reporting to funding bodies, it is essential you are diligent and analytical in these efforts. Competency in the use of computer programs is also required.

Most importantly, MHSAC is seeking an empathetic individual who understands how to effectively communicate with Aboriginal people and families in a culturally sensitive manner. You will possess knowledge of the complexities of dealing with this particular set of clients, and be skilled at thinking out of the box when required to treat each individual in a way suited to their needs. The ability to triage, coupled with a flexible and adaptable approach to your day to day, will ensure you find solutions that best meet the needs of the community.

It is a requirement of this role that candidates possess an OCHRE Card (Working With Children Clearance Check), a current driver's licence and are willing to undergo a police check prior to employment with MHSAC.

About the Benefits

MHBAC would like to offer the successful candidate an attractive base salary circa $95,000 - $115,000 (determined by qualifications and experience) plus 9.5% super, alongside a wide range of benefits, including:

Maningrida is a coastal Aboriginal community in the heart of the Arnhem Land region, located about 520km east of Darwin.
