A School with a Difference

Established in 1975, Wulungarra Community School (WCS) is a remote school for Indigenous children located within the Millijidee Station, approximately 250 km south of Fitzroy Crossing.

A 'living treasure' surrounded by the beautiful St George Ranges, the school has approximately 20 students and is committed to strengthening local infrastructure, culture and lifestyle. The school places high importance and investment in activities that stimulate the well-being and morale of students and staff within the community.

Governed by Kadjina Community Incorporated, their aim is to ensure that learning is a central activity for all, challenging students to recognise and reach their full potential. There is a focus on teaching Standard Australian English literacy and numeracy while recognising the students' status as speakers of other languages.

Are you ready for your next big adventure?

Wulungarra Community School now has an opportunity for an experienced Primary Teacher to join their team on a full-time basis, commencing at the start of the school year in January 2020.

Reporting to the Principal on all curriculum matters including the development and implementation of all work programmes, term planners, assessments and learning resources, you will teach children across early education and primary year levels.

Your daily duties will include (but not be limited to) the following:

  • Preparing daily lessons and long-term teaching programs in accordance with syllabuses and work programmes;
  • Using a range of teaching methods, including formal lessons, discussions, practical activities, projects and excursions, according to the needs of each student;
  • Evaluating and reporting on the progress of their students, discussing individual performance and problems with students and parents;
  • Promoting positive behaviour choices, good working habits and discipline in classrooms and throughout the school; and
  • Participating in other activities in partnership with parents and the school community, including parent/teacher afternoons, committee meetings and any other designated event, as required.

If you would be relocating as part of a couple, arrangements could be made to accomodate a second position for your partner, depending on their skills or areas of interest.

What You Will Need to Succeed

To be successful in this position you will hold relevant teaching qualifications and have or be eligible to obtain full registration with the Teacher Registration Board of WA.

You will be able to teach in multi-age classrooms (including a small kindergarten component), and a strong focus on literacy and numeracy will also be critical to your success in this position. Any experience in or a willingness to learn speciality areas such as music, drama, or physical education will be highly regarded.

Previous experience living and/or working within a remote Indigenous community is highly desirable, however, is not mandatory provided you have an understanding of the unique difficulties of working in a remote area. Most importantly, Wulungarra Community School is looking for candidates with a passion for Indigenous education; a willingness and desire to teach to the needs of individual students; and a genuine desire to live and work in the region.

About the Benefits

Whilst this lifestyle is not for everyone, for those that are truly open and committed to the opportunity, you will be offered a life-changing experience in which you will see the direct, positive impact you are making to the lives of children in the community on a daily basis.
