About Mornington Shire Council and Life on Mornington Island

Mornington Shire Council is a dynamic local government organisation tackling significant issues at a social, economic and practical level on behalf of its residents. It provides a range of services to twenty two islands of the Wellesley Group in the Gulf of Carpentaria, including Council Administration, Waste Management, Municipal Services, Sport and Recreation, Water and Sewerage Maintenance and Civil Works.

Mornington Island, the largest island in the group is located 125kms north-west of Burketown, 200kms west of Karumba and 444kms from Mount Isa. The population is estimated to be 1142 as of 2011, with the majority of the citizens living in the township of Gununa. As well as the local government offices, Gununa is also home to a child care centre and a public school (teaching up to grade 10), and is serviced by regular passenger flights from Mt Isa and Cairns as well as a barge from Karumba.

The islands are renowned for their windswept beaches lined with sea-oak trees, rocky outcrops and mangroves. The surrounding sea is abundant with fish and marine life, such as turtle and dugong. The Lardil, Kaiadilt and Yangkaal people manage a number of land and sea management projects aimed at maintaining the unique natural environment and supporting future generations to live off the land.

About the Opportunity

Mornington Shire Council now has a challenging, but rewarding opportunity for a full-time Kiosk Manager to join their team based in Gununa on Mornington Island.

The Lelka Murrin Kiosk is the only fast-food cafe on the Island. It is open from approximately 6am to 2pm Monday to Friday, offering a range of breakfast and lunch options including burgers, salad sandwiches, coffees and a range of other hot items including bacon and egg rolls, hot chips, pies and sausage rolls.

This position will see you responsible for the day-to-day operations and revenue generation of the Lelka Murrin Kiosk. This will include everything from stock ordering, menu planning, food preparation and serving of customers, all whilst adhering to appropriate work place health and safety requirements.

You will also provide direct leadership to a team of approximately 4-5 casual employees, all of which are young, Aboriginal girls from the local community. A critical component of this position will be the ability to provide guidance, mentoring and training to these girls in a way that fosters mutual respect and encourages engagement and positive customer experiences.

About You

To be considered for this position you will have previous experience in a supervisory capacity, managing a commercial kitchen and a demonstrated working knowledge of food safety, health and hygiene principles.

You will have a nurturing, 'firm, but fair' approach to leadership; will be openminded and flexible in resolving problems and will demonstrate a clear appreciation of, and respect for, working in Indigenous communities, with the aim to develop positive relationships with community members and increase patronage at the kiosk.

Importantly, Council is looking for someone who is moving to the Island for the right reasons. This is an extremely remote location that offers very little in the way of recreational activities or infrastructure and as such you must be comfortable living and working within these conditions and be resilient in the face of the challenges that this lifestyle can present.

Please note: It is a condition of employment with Mornington Shire Council that you must be an Australian Resident or hold the appropriate visa to work within Australia. Prior to commencement with Mornington Shire Council the successful candidate will be required to undertake a new criminal history check and obtain a Working with Children Blue Card. A current manual driver's license is a must and you must be willing to participate in random drug and alcohol testing.

About the Benefits

This is a highly challenging role in an extremely remote location. But for the right person it is a once in a lifetime opportunity to experience a part of Australia that most people never will - and get paid to do it!

The successful candidate will be provided with an attractive remuneration package negotiable with skills and experience. An excellent range of additional benefits are also on offer including:

  • 6 weeks annual leave;
  • 17.5% loading;
  • 15 days personal leave;

  • Return annual airfares to Cairns, Darwin, Mount Isa or Normanton (2 per 12 month timeframe); and
