A corporate team of housing professionals works diligently to make the Nunavut Housing Corporation (NHC) an action-oriented service delivery agency. Our key strength lies in our collective passion and ability to deliver targeted housing solutions to all. These include: 

  • Education, training, and support to Local Housing Organizations in the areas of administration, finance, program delivery and technical construction techniques and procedures;
  • Homeowner services in the areas of finance, life skills and technical assistance; Property management services to Government employees in Government Staff Housing; and

With 5 distinct offices in Nunavut (HQ Operations in Arviat, a Directorate Office in Iqaluit and 3 offices for our District Operations in Cape Dorset, Arviat and Cambridge Bay), our cohesive team is strengthened by a network of 25 Local Housing Organizations (LHO) that provide a crucial link to Nunavummiut and their communities.

About the Opportunity

The Nunavut Housing Corporation (NHC) currently have an exciting opportunity for a Maintenance Manager to join our team in Cambridge Bay, Nunavut.

Reporting to the Housing Manager, the Maintenance Manager will be responsible for the efficient and effective use of the Housing Association’s resources, including funds, in the fulfilment of the Housing Association mandate.

You will also be leading a team of 8 to 20 workers to perform the overall maintenance, preventative maintenance and renovations of approximately 276 units in public housing, and staff housing.

Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Implementing preventative maintenance requirements in consultation with Secretary/Manager and staff and establishing annual plans to complete those requirements.
  • Developing an annual work plan to provide the required maintenance services.
  • Conducting semi-annual inspections of buildings and works to review the standard of maintenance being provided, adherence to the plan, identifying problem areas and revising plan as needed.
  • Ordering ample stock of materials to follow the maintenance programs by constantly reviewing inventory and preparing major materials orders to meet annual re-supply dates.
  • Utilizing a computerized maintenance management system to help plan maintenance needs.
  • Managing, monitoring and reporting on the status and history of the maintenance program.
  • Providing your supervisor with information on productivity, problems and trends.
  • Reviewing with maintenance personnel from the Nunavut Housing Corporation maintenance standards and recommending changes where necessary.
  • Providing supervisory direction and expertise to staff.
  • Planning and administering the execution of capital projects.
  • Performing other duties as required.

To qualify for this role, you will have:  

  • A Journeyman certification in one of the residential building trades or post-secondary education in engineering, technology or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 or more years of experience in supervising employees.
  • Several years’ experience in a supervisory position with proven and successful leadership skills.
  • Experience using Computerized Maintenance Management software and general knowledge of MS suite of office products.
  • The knowledge and ability to maintain a safe working environment.
  • The ability to draft reports and scopes of work, follow budgets closely, develop accurate project cost estimates, properly maintain adequate parts inventory, monitor tendering processes, and supervise contractors.
  • A current class 5 driver’s license.
  • The willingness and ability to pass a criminal record check and a vulnerable record check.

The successful candidate will demonstrate strong problem-solving and time management skills. The ability to coordinate many activities simultaneously and to track the progress of all of the activities is crucial. Similarly, you will need to be able to estimate and cost-out materials, labour, and other expenses for projects and to budget all activities within the maintenance department.

Finally, you must be self-motivated and have the ability to work effectively as part of a team and individually. Fluency in more than one of Nunavut’s official languages is an asset, as is knowledge of Inuit language, communities, culture and lands.
