About the Organisation

New Britain Palm Oil Limited (NBPOL) is a large-scale integrated, and leading industrial producer of sustainable palm oil in Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands.

The NBPOL Group has over 76,000 hectares of planted oil palm plantations, a further 10,000 hectares under preparation for oil palm, over 5,500 hectares of sugar cane and a further 9,000 hectares of grazing pasture, twelve oil mills, two refineries (one in PNG, and one in Liverpool, UK), as well as a seed production and plant breeding facility.

Fully RSPO accredited, NBPOL is fully vertically integrated, producing its own seed (which it also sells globally) and planting, cultivating and harvesting its own land and processing and refining palm oil, in both PNG and the UK. It also contracts directly with its end-customers in the EU and arranges the shipping of its products.

About the Opportunity

NBPOL now has a fantastic opportunity for a Cane Production Manager to join their diverse and expanding organisation based in Ramu, Papua New Guinea. This is a full-time, 5 year contract position with potential to extend after this time.

Reporting to the Sugar Agriculture Manager and overseeing a team of approximately 50 reports, this is a senior position within the organisation responsible for managing all aspects of sugarcane production on a nucleus estate of 5,600ha and outgrowers lands of 2,000ha.

Key accountabilities will include (but not be limited to):

  • Planning and execution of land preparation, planting and crop husbandry operations in line with Company policy;
  • Assisting with the preparation and management of the annual sugarcane agriculture operating budget;
  • Coordinating machinery and labour resources for sugarcane field operations;
  • Operational responsibility for the centralised agricultural machinery fleet;
  • Ensuring that field records are kept accurate and up to date with all activities and material inputs; and
  • Liaising with other internal departments to ensure that pest and disease management programmes are executed to requirement, that machinery is well maintained and operational and that all agricultural chemicals and inputs are ordered in time and available when required.

Prior to commencement in this position, New Britain Palm Oil will fly you to PNG (if you don't already live locally), in order for you to visit the estate and see the local community firsthand. 

About You

With strong potential for upward mobility within the organisation, this is a fantastic opportunity for someone looking for a role that can propel them into executive leadership.

To be considered for this position you will ideally hold tertiary qualifications in Agricultural Science or similar, with extensive experience in sugar cane/agriculture production and operations.

As you will be overseeing a large team, it is essential that you have a proven track record of managing, building and developing a high performing plantation team. You will be an engaging leader with high emotional intelligence, excellent communication skills, and the ability to influence behaviour across all levels of the organisation. Previous experience living/working in a remote location will be highly regarded, however is not mandatory providing you can demonstrate a cultural sensitivity when communicating with employees, contractors and other stakeholders from the local area.

Importantly, you will be commercially savvy, with a strong financial acumen and the ability to add real value in the strategic growth and development of the business.
