About Warlpiri Youth Development Aboriginal Corporation (WYDAC)

Warlpiri Youth Development Aboriginal Corporation (WYDAC) has dedicated itself to developing the strength, health, confidence and leadership of Warlpiri youth since 1993. The program aims to promote positive and meaningful future pathways for all young Warlpiri people.

The notable, and sustainable, success of the program has been firmly based on the strength of Warlpiri youth, families and their communities, as well as the ongoing commitment of staff. The program was created by, and for, Warlpiri people, and is governed by a Warlpiri Committee.

The WYDAC head office is located in Yuendumu Community, however WYDAC is comprised of a variety of programs operating at five different Warlpiri sites – Yuendumu, Willowra, Nyirrpi, Lajamanu and Mt Theo Outstation. WYDAC also have an office located in Alice Springs. There are over 70 staff across the entire organisation with more than half of these being Warlpiri people.

About the Opportunity

The Warlpiri Youth Development Aboriginal Corporation (WYDAC) now has a rewarding opportunity for a full-time Youth Program Team Leader to join their Yuendumu team.

Reporting to the Youth Program Coordinator, your primary role will be to lead the Yuendumu Youth Worker team, to provide a six day per week program of activities that effectively and appropriately fulfil the purpose of the youth program and promote positive and meaningful pathways for all young Warlpiri people, their families and communities.

This will be achieved by:

  • Working closely with the Yuendumu Youth Development Team to facilitate a daily youth activities program (activities will involve, not exclusively, basketball, softball, disco, youth drop-in centre, educational activities, and cultural excursions);
  • Supporting the Yuendumu Youth Development Team to deliver youth program activities to a high and efficient standard;
  • Actively supporting Jaru workers in the pathways they choose ie. employment, parenthood, leadership, etc.;
  • Identifying and supporting appropriate pathways for Warlpiri young people to become youth workers; and
  • Ensuring regular contact is made with the Cultural Advisors around programming activities, ideas, and projects. 

All activities have an overall objective to provide rehabilitation, youth diversionary activities and positive alternatives to prison or juvenile detention for young people at risk.

About You

WYDAC is looking for candidates with experience working with cross-cultural persons and a demonstrated understanding of youth-at-risk and remote community issues. Ideally, you will hold a Certificate IV in Youth Work and/or relevant tertiary qualifications, however these are not essential.

You will have excellent communication skills, the demonstrated ability to work in a team with resourcefulness, self-motivation and independent decision-making capabilities. A resilient operator, you will have good negotiation skills and be calm under pressure.

The role would best suit someone who is passionate about youth work and remote-area assistance, who would fully appreciate an opportunity to embrace another culture and learn while they teach! 

Please note: To be considered you must have a current ‘Class C’ Open Driver’s License, and be willing to undergo a criminal history check and Working with Children clearance (Ochre Card) prior to commencement.
