About the Opportunity

Mornington Shire Council now has an opportunity for a full-time Works Manager to join their team on Mornington Island. This is a 2 year, full-time contract position. 

Reporting to the Executive Manager Technical Services, this position will see you primarily responsible for contributing to the planning and delivery of Technical Services programs for Council, including Civil Works, Airport, Parks and Gardens, Waste Management, Animal Control, Water & Sewerage, and Cemetery.

Key deliverables/accountabilities will include:

  • Contributing to the development and implementation of the Technical Services Department’s budget and financial models;
  • Contributing to the Technical services Department’s medium and long term planning;
  • Ensuring Council services are delivered in accordance with Corporate and Operational Plans;
  • Ensuring Council provides customer-focused products and services to the community;
  • Assisting in the development and implementation of organisational risk management procedures;
  • Assisting in implementing Council's Works Program in a hands-on capacity; and
  • Liaising with community residents and stakeholders to ensure departmental projects and services meet community needs, expectations and standards.

What you need to succeed

Due to the nature of the role, Council is seeking candidates who hold post-secondary qualifications or significant experience in Civil Construction, Engineering, or other related field, alongside a background within a similar works coordination / management capacity.

A strong communicator, you will possess excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively motivate your team to achieve their goals. 

Importantly, Council is looking for someone who is willing to roll up their sleeves and bring a hands-on approach to the role. In order to effectively organise and oversee a multitude of jobs, people, tenants, and more, you must be well-organised and skilled in prioritisation. This being said, it is crucial you be an adaptable individual who remains calm in stressful situations and is able to introduce a solutions focused perspective to the management of unexpected challenges in your day to day.

Critical to your success in this role will be the willingness and resilience to live and work in a highly remote location. You will be comfortable living and working with people from all different cultural backgrounds, including Indigenous Australians, and will be unbiased, hardworking, honest and respectful in all of your dealings with employees and relevant stakeholders. 

Although not essential, Local Government experience will be highly regarded.

About Mornington Shire Council and Mornington Island

Mornington Shire Council provides a range of services to twenty two islands of the Wellesley Group in the Gulf of Carpentaria, in the State of Queensland. Mornington Island is the largest island in the group with the main township of Gununa, housing the majority of the population. Mornington Island is located 125kms north-west of Burketown, 200kms west of Karumba and 444kms from Mount Isa. 

The islands are renowned for their windswept beaches lined with sea-oak trees, rocky outcrops and mangroves. The surrounding sea is abundant with fish and marine life, such as turtle and dugong. Please note: A current, Class C Driver's License with a manual driving capacity is required for this role. Prior to employment you must also hold/obtain the following:

  • Undertake a new criminal history check;
  • Hold a current Working with Children Clearance (blue card), with renewal every two years through the HR department; and
  • Be an Australian resident or provide the current, relevant Visa to work within Australia.
