About the Opportunities

Mornington Shire Council now has two opportunities available with their team on Mornington Island. They are looking for a Warehouse Manager to join the team as part of a 2 year, full-time contract, and an Assistant Warehouse Manager on a 1 year, full-time contract basis.

Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the Warehouse Manager position will see you primarily responsible for managing all aspects of the Council's store including goods inwards/outwards, cost control, and purchasing of store stock and staff management.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Ensuring that all areas of Council are supported by providing fuel, mechanical parts, road construction, consumables and building trade materials;
  • Analysing usage and receiving, issuing, and re-ordering items according to demand;
  • Managing and overseeing operations associated with deliveries from barges to the island, including barge unloading and loading;
  • Ensuring the timely and accurate delivery of goods to customers, and arranging for the timely return of faulty or incorrect goods;
  • Assisting in the development of positive relationships with suppliers to ensure maximum purchasing power for Council;
  • Ensuring a consistently high level of customer service to the local community; and
  • Maintaining security and upkeep of the premises and the surrounds of the warehouse.

The Assistant Warehouse Manager will be assisting in all of the above activities, in addition to providing a customer service point of contact at the front desk of the warehouse.

Some of your key responsibilities will include:

  • Assisting the Warehouse Manager with administration of all paperwork and data entry;
  • Ensuring that goods are unloaded and distributed from the Barge in a quick and efficient manner;
  • Heavy lifting and manual handling as per the WH&S Act;
  • Ensuring all documentation required is sent to the Finance Department in a timely manner;
  • Providing advice regarding policies specific to Council assets and inventory management; and
  • Ensuring all stock has visible and accurate stock codes, and that all bin locations are accurate and kept current.

What you need to succeed

Council is seeking candidates with significant experience and understanding of work activities, procedures, and operational functions within a warehouse environment. This includes stock control, inventory, stocktaking, ordering and purchasing methodology. Whilst the Warehouse Manager position will need someone with extensive warehouse management experience, the Assistant Warehouse Manager role would suit someone with significant experience in warehousing, who is looking to step up into a management role.

Both positions will require demonstrated skills in utilising computer programs (ERP's) for managing inventory and purchasing, customer service and staff supervision.

Importantly, Council is looking for people who are willing to roll up their sleeves and bring a hands-on approach to these roles. Whilst there will be a degree of office and administration work in both positions, you will need to be comfortable and willing to get your boots dirty, and in particular the Assistant Warehouse Manager role will require the ability to perform manual handling tasks with no restrictions.

Finally, to succeed as a Warehouse Manager you will need significant analytical skills, with the ability to analyse stock usage and plan accordingly. Due to external factors the Barge can sometimes not arrive or be delayed, and you will need to be able to plan ahead to ensure the community and Council are supported despite these issues.

Critical to your success in either role will be the willingness and resilience to live and work in a highly remote location. You will be comfortable living and working with people from all different cultural backgrounds, including Indigenous Australians, and will be unbiased, hardworking, honest and respectful in all of your dealings with the community and other relevant stakeholders.

Please Note: Mornington Island is a dry community.

About the Benefits

These are rewarding and challenging management position within a remote community. You will be joining a team of resilient, passionate and dedicated individuals working together to support the local community.

On offer is an attractive base salary circa $80,000 - $90,000 for the Warehouse Manager, and $60,000 - $70,000 for the Assistant Warehouse Manager (negotiable with skills and experience) plus super and an excellent range of benefits including:

  • 6 weeks annual leave
  • Fully furnished, highly subsidised accommodation
  • Relocation Assistance
  • 2 return flights per year to point of recruitment
