About the Opportunities

Mornington Shire Council now has multiple opportunities for Automotive Mechanics to join their team on Mornington Island on a 1 year, full-time contract basis. Council is looking for Light Vehicle, Diesel, Electrical, Hydraulic or otherwise good 'All-Rounder' mechanics.

Reporting to the Workshop Manager, these positions will be responsible for servicing the Council's fleet of vehicles and plant equipment assets, in addition to assisting the Workshop Manager with operating commercially viable private works for the local community. The Council automotive workshop services all of Mornington Island, including the supply of vehicle and outboard fuel.

Some of your key responsibilities will include:

  • Undertaking vehicle services, repairs, and maintenance for Council, community and third party vehicles;
  • Reporting any tools and equipment that require repair or replacement to the Workshop Manager;
  • Organising quotes for private works, operating an effective booking system, and servicing these vehicles within dedicated timeframes;
  • Ensuring that work is performed and waste is disposed of within both Environmental Protection Act legislation and Council policy;
  • Recording Individual Vehicle Reports for Council vehicles and performing basic administrative duties including answering calls, photocopying, data entry, and filing;
  • Delivering a consistently high level of customer service to the local community; and
  • Providing leadership, overseeing, and training Apprentices and Trainees to complete competences.

What you need to succeed

Council is seeking reliable and consistent candidates who are trade qualified in a relevant field. You will need to be highly organised and skilled in prioritisation, in addition to having computer literacy and data entry skills.

Critical to your success in one of these roles will be the willingness and resilience to live and work in a highly remote location. You will be comfortable living and working with people from all different cultural backgrounds, including Indigenous Australians, and will be unbiased, hardworking, honest and respectful in all of your dealings with the community and other relevant stakeholders.
