About the Organisation

Ruth's Women's Shelter Cairns Inc. is a feminist, community-lead, not-for-profit organisation that provides secure and confidential crisis accommodation, guidance, and support to women and children escaping Domestic Violence and Family Violence.

Established in 1977, Ruth's is run by a committee of volunteers and has 2 full-time staff, plus 6 other casual and part time employees that ensure 24 hour support is available to those who need it.

The purpose built property can accommodate up to 8 families, with each staying in their own room and sharing the 2 kitchens, 2 lounge areas, 3 children play areas, outdoor areas and laundry.

About the Opportunity

Ruth's Women's Shelter has a new opportunity for a passionate and dedicated individual to join their team as a full-time Manager.

Reporting to the Management Committee, and with initial assistance from the current Manager, this autonomous role will see you will primarily responsible for proactively managing all aspects of the shelter to ensure it functions in an effective and efficient manner and meets the organisation's objectives and broader social goals.

Your main responsibilities will include, but may not be limited to:

  • Ensuring the provision of a range of high-quality support services to women and children who are escaping domestic or family violence;
  • Attending regular meetings and corresponding with a range of internal and external stakeholders, including shelter residents and government or community organisations;
  • Organising shelter maintenance, ensuring all works are compliant with workplace health and safety standards;
  • Ensuring the accurate completion, execution and compliance of grant applications;
  • Overseeing the management of financial resources, budgets and assets; and
  • Coordinating fundraising events and activities.

About You

To be considered for this role you will have considerable experience working in a supervisory or management level position and an extensive history of providing support to women who have experienced domestic violence.

Any qualifications completed in Social Science or a relevant area would be highly regarded, although not required, however it is essential that you have a sound knowledge and understanding of the effects and causes of domestic violence from a feminist perspective including knowledge of cultural differences and needs.

You will have a well-rounded set of management skills, and be able to work autonomously on a variety of tasks and projects, effectively managing competing deadlines whilst staying flexible enough to deal with urgent situations as required. With fantastic communication and interpersonal skills, you will be able to effortlessly lead a diverse, multidisciplinary team and effectively build strong relationships with clients and the community.

Most importantly you will be caring, compassionate, and dedicated to supporting women to live a life free of violence, ensuring that Ruth's remains a respectful, safe, and non-judgemental environment.

Please note:  You will need a current, valid Driver's License and have or be able to obtain a current Working With Children Check and a current National Police Check.
