About the Organisation

Yakanarra is a small Aboriginal community, approximately 60 kilometres south-west of Fitzroy Crossing in the Kimberley Region of Western Australia, within the Shire of Derby-West Kimberley. Road access is via the Cherabun Road which intersects the Great Northern Highway 57 km east of Fitzroy Crossing.

School aged children in the Yakanarra community attend the Yakanarra Community School. Established in 1991, the school conducts classes from pre-school to year 10 and caters for approximately 20 primary students and 10 junior secondary students. 

About the Opportunity

Yakanarra Community School has a rewarding opportunity for a full-time School Principal to lead their team in the St Georges Ranges in WA, starting Term 1, 2020.

Reporting to the Board, you will be responsible for overseeing and implementing the unique learning model which includes both an on-country learning program and a regular language lesson proponent run by the Indigenous staff.

You will be responsible for overseeing staff in both areas as well as the day to day school administration work.

Key duties will include (but will not be limited to):

  • Managing the daily running of the school;
  • Coordinating staff and staff meetings;
  • Keeping on top of the grounds, grounds staff and regular maintenance;
  • Managing any ongoing health activities for students; and
  • Maintaining the strong ties within the community.

Please note: These duties can be split into a Principal and an Administration officer role, if you are looking to apply as a couple. In this case, the Administration Officer would be compensated accordingly, in line with their experience and qualifications.

Yakanarra Community School works closely with the local community to make sure each student is well taken care of in all areas of their lives, not just education.

About You

This non-traditional principal role will require a candidate who is committed, resilient, empathetic and has a passion for Indigenous education. You will be ready and willing to take on a new challenge and understand the diversity that a role like this entails.

You will currently be registered or have the ability to obtain registration with the TRBWA. While, previous experience as a Principal is not required, you will have a visible passion and energy to work in this remote/cross-cultural environment.

Proven experience working with Indigenous students and/or teaching in a remote location is highly desirable. Ongoing engagement with the community will be a high priority for you and you will see the value in maintaining that relationship.

You will be a confident communicator, have strong conflict management skills and a willingness to work collaboratively while remaining adaptable and flexible.

You will understand it is the Principal's responsibility to promote the cultural aims and purposes of the School specifically providing work for Aboriginal persons and will work hard to do so. 

It is important to note that a National Police Clearance and a Working with Children check will need to be obtained before commencement of this role.

For your hard work and dedication, you will be rewarded with an attractive salary circa $115,000 plus super, an annual tax rebate of $1,173. You will also have access to salary sacrificing up to $500 a fortnight, relocation assistance, and subsidised, fully furnished private accommodation at $50/$75 per week.
