About Doomadgee Aboriginal Shire Council

Doomadgee Aboriginal Shire Council, formerly known as an Aboriginal Community Council, is the local government provider in the Doomadgee region.

Doomadgee is a largely Indigenous community located in the Gulf of Carpentaria, approximately 140km from the Northern Territory border and 93km west of Burketown. The community is positioned alongside the Nicholson River and provides access to the coast, freshwater rivers and Lawn Hill National Park, one of the Gulf’s most popular natural tourist attractions.

The community is well resourced with a retail store, schools from preschool through to secondary, a hospital and plenty of accommodation facilities. 

About the Opportunity

Doomadgee Aboriginal Shire Council (Doomadgee), now has an opportunity for a Director of Engineering to join their team on a full-time basis.

Reporting directly to Chief Executive Officer, you will be responsible for the delivery of an effective and comprehensive infrastructure service to Doomadgee including but not limited to; roads, drainage structure, water supply, sewage, parks , buildings, structures and airports.

Your day-to-day duties will include (but not be limited to):

  • Overseeing the delivery of services to a high standard in an efficient and effective manner;
  • Maintaining Council's fleet of equipment;
  • Managing the waste management function including collection and disposal; 
  • Planning of works and supervising of staff;
  • Maintaining Shire roads, drainage works and buildings;
  • Managing Council's contracted works relating to infrastructure; and
  • Undertaking specific project management of functions and issues that have a significant impact on Doomadgee.

About You

To be considered for this position you will have qualifications in engineering or construction and/or extensive experience in a similar role. 

Project management experience, preferably in the construction industry as well as experience supervising a team is requirement for the role.

You are known for being organised, with some building design experience. With the appreciation for the time delays that working in a remote community bring, you will be adaptable and tenacious in your work.

Importantly, Doomadgee is looking for candidates with strong communication, negotiation and interpersonal skills. You will have an understanding of cross-cultural awareness and practice and be comfortable engaging positively within an indigenous community. 

Due to the nature of the position, you will need to be resilient, honest and flexible to thrive in a regional location. Experience working within a remote or regional  community would be highly desirable.

The successful candidate must have a White Card and a manual driver's license prior to commencement of the position.
