About the Organisation

The Central Land Council (CLC) is a Commonwealth Government statutory authority covering the entire southern half of the Northern Territory - an area of 776,549 square kilometres. The Council consists of 90 Aboriginal people elected from communities in the southern half of the Northern Territory. More than 250 people work at the CLC and at least half of its employees are Aboriginal.

The Central Land Council provides a number of services for the benefit of traditional owners and other Aboriginal residents of the CLC region, including:

  • Providing a strong voice for the Aboriginal people of Central Australia;
  • Helping Aboriginal people get back country and manage their land;
  • Consulting with landowners on mining activity, employment, development and other land use proposals;
  • Protecting Aboriginal culture and sacred sites and fighting for legal recognition of Aboriginal people's rights;
  • Helping resolve land disputes, native title claims and compensation cases; and
  • Running the permit system for visitors to Aboriginal land.

About the Opportunity

The Central Land Council is looking for an Organisational Development and Work Health & Safety Officer to join their team in Alice Springs on a full-time basis. This is a fixed-term, 12 month contract, with the possibility to extend.

Reporting to the Human Resources Manager, you'll be responsible for the planning, development and evaluation of training and development programs, and WHS risk management activities. 

Key responsibilities will include (but will not be limited to):

  • Recommend and coordinate training and development needs;
  • Support the Aboriginal Development Program, including cadets and trainees;
  • Coordinate/undertake WHS activities, including incident management, inspections and emergency response processes;
  • Support the WHS committee in matters relating to workplace hazards, inspections, policy reviews and actions from committee meetings and training;
  • Liaising with the WHS Committee;
  • Contribute to the development, implementation, maintenance and reporting of strategic and organisational initiatives, HR strategies, policies, projects and practices; 

Please note: This role will require some regular remote travel to conduct inspections or coordinate training.

About You

Whilst relevant qualifications are desirable,  you will need demonstrated experience in Work Health and Safety including implementation and monitoring of the WHS management system, in particular risk management. 

Due to the nature of this role, relevant experience in training and development is important. Candidates with manufacturing, agricultural or mining experience will be highly regarded along with experience working with Aboriginal people.

You'll thrive in a busy office environment and be calm under pressure, able to juggle competing priorities with ease as you follow complex projects from initial conception through to completion. 

You will have sound written and oral communications skills; the ability to work autonomously, and be able to perform administrative duties using a range of software applications including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and databases.

Please note: You will be required to have, or willing and able to obtain, an unrestricted manual licence and if the successful candidate, to obtain an Ochre card (Working with vulnerable people) prior to commencing the position.
