Life Without Barriers (LWB) is a national not-for-profit organisation working to support children and young people in crisis, people with a disability and those with a mental health issue. The organisation is a leading provider of care in Australia and is renowned for its flexibility, innovation and strong community focus.

Since inception in 1995, LWB has expanded into every Australian State and Territory and recently into New Zealand, as a result of rapid growth and a dramatic increase in demand for services.

As part of a continuous improvement strategy, the organisation is developing new ways of assessing and managing the delivery of services.

This involves the creation of a series of specialised programs to target areas of growth and development. These programs are designed to relate directly to an individual's case plan and to assist them in achieving their goals.

Disability Support Workers and Youth Workers are the heart of LWB and are central to the success of the support the organisation gives clients. LWB Support Workers come from a range of backgrounds and can provide a care in a variety of ways. LWB is committed to providing 24-hour support for Support Workers and helping ensure they create a safe, caring environment for the people they are caring for.

About the Opportunity

Due to expansion of services, Life without Barriers has a fantastic opportunity for a number of Disability Support Workers and Youth Workers to join their team in Alice Springs on a contract basis (either a casual, part time or full time workload).

The main aim of the Disability Support Worker role is to support people with disabilities.

Some of your more specific responsibilities will be to:

  • Carry out tasks and activities aimed at meeting clients' personal living / community needs, team objectives and/or program goals;
  • Carry out duties / activities in a cooperative, respectful and flexible manner;
  • Abide by the service / facility communication, reporting and client / program progress practices and procedures;
  • Participate in developing and monitoring individual program plans, and be accountable for their outcomes; and
  • Establish good working relationships and networks with other community organisations to keep abreast of community activities and initiatives.

The main aim of the Youth Worker role is to support young people with complex and challenging behaviors.

Some of your more specific responsibilities will be to:

  • Assist clients to have the opportunity to develop and maintain skills, capacities, and lifestyles that are valued in the community;
  • Assist clients to participate as fully as possible in making decisions about the events and activities of their daily life in relation to the services they receive from LWB;
  • Respect individual rights to privacy, dignity and confidentiality in all aspects of their life; and
  • Understand legal rights and staff responsibilities in accordance with those rights.

LWB's ideal candidate will be a caring individual with a non-judgmental attitude, and an understanding of the lifestyle support requirements of people with disabilities and youth with challenging behaviours.

The successful candidates should have strong communication and organisational skills, and the ability to work with challenging behaviours. LWB is looking for dedicated individuals who are genuinely committed to enhancing the quality of life for people with a disability.

Disability Support Workers will need to hold, or be willing to obtain, a Certificate III in Community Services. Please note that the organisation will provide on-the-job training in order for you to obtain this Certificate if you do not already hold it. Due to the nature of this role, it is also essential you hold a current driver's licence.

Youth Workers will need to hold, or be willing to obtain, a Certificate IV in Community Services (Youth/Welfare). Please note that the organisation will provide on-the-job training in order for you to obtain this Certificate if you do not already hold it. Importantly you will have demonstrated experience working in a residential or community based care setting with young people combined with a working knowledge of all relevant legislation. Due to the nature of this role, it is also essential you hold a current driver's licence.

Candidates who hold a first aid certificate will be held in high regard, although this is not essential.

The organisation is looking for people who are available to work rostered hours. Currently, weekday and weekend (day and night) shifts are available.
