About the Organisation

Ord Valley Aboriginal Health Service (OVAHS) provides a comprehensive Primary Health Care service to Aboriginal people in the East Kimberley region in Western Australia using a holistic approach that includes a high standard of service delivery, the promotion of social justice and the overcoming of the health issues that affect so many people in the region.

Preventative and public health programs include Maternal and Child Health, Women’s Health, Chronic Disease, Sexual Health and along with the OVAHS Social Support Unit which offers AOD, Mental Health Services, health promotion and education programs in the areas of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders prevention, smoking cessation, chronic disease prevention, childhood health promotion and sexual health.

Staff include: SMO, GPs, Nurse Practitioner, Aboriginal Health Workers, Aboriginal Liaison Officers, Registered Nurses, Midwife, Child Health Nurse, Mental Health workers, Allied Health staff, and Health Promotion workers, together with Senior Managers, Administration staff, Maintenance workers and Field Officers.

Most importantly, OVAHS approaches involve community people taking part in controlling their own health and wellbeing. Management and governance, staff selection, and service delivery priorities are directed by the organisation’s Aboriginal Board and Community Health Committees. About the Opportunity

Ord Valley Aboriginal Health Service (OVAHS) is seeking a Registered Nurse (Generalist and Rheumatic Heart Disease) to join their team on a full-time basis in Kununurra, WA.

Reporting to the Health Operations Manageryou will be providing primary health services to clients in the clinic and on community outreach visits as well as coordinating the rheumatic heart disease patient care.

More specifically, you will be:

  • Ensuring the focus of care is on the needs of Aboriginal clients within the context of their cultural identity and social circumstances;
  • Working with the OVAHS team in providing a quality and client focused environment;
  • Supporting the delivery of safe and effective patient care;
  • Participating in cultural safety and competence training and staff development; and
  • Maintaining statistics, administrative records and client documents as per OVAHS policies and procedures.

About You

To be considered for this position, you will be currently registered with AHPRA as a Registered Nurse with at least two years post graduate nursing experience. A demonstrated knowledge of clinical management especially in support of clients with rheumatic heart disease would be a necessity for this role.

You will need to be able to work collaboratively within a team, with proficient writing and computer skills.

Importantly, OVAHS is looking for someone with good interpersonal and cross-cultural communication skills who has a sound knowledge and understanding of the issues impacting on the mental health and wellbeing of Aboriginal people. Any experience working constructively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island people and/or communities will be highly regarded.

Please note: In addition to the above skills and experience, the successful candidate will require a Current “C” class drivers licence, and either hold or be willing to obtain a National Police Clearance and Working with Children clearance prior to commencement.
