About the Opportunity
Due to recent growth, Tasman District Council now has a number of opportunities for Consent Planners to join their diverse and supportive team. These roles are being offered on a full-time basis and situated in the picturesque town of Richmond, South Island of New Zealand.
The priority need is for experienced Natural Resource - Consent Planners, however Council would also welcome applications from individuals with Planning experience in Land Use and Subdivision Consents.
Reporting to the Resource Consents – Team Leader, your primary responsibility will be to give professional advice and technical expertise on regional and earthworks resource consent applications, and to provide advice on matters concerning the Resource Management Act 1991.
Your duties will include (but not be limited to):
- Researching and preparing reports with recommendations on resource consent applications;
- Interpreting and maintaining an up-to-date understanding of the requirements of the Resource Management Act;
- Providing a courteous and timely response to public enquiries on consent issues;
- Supporting and advising senior members within Council on resource management issues to enable informed decision making;
- Assessing Building Consent applications for planning compliance and providing planning advice on LIMS (Land Information Memorandum);
- Undertaking planning enforcement action as required under the Resource Management Act; and
- Preparing and presenting evidence when required at the Environment and District Courts.

About You
The successful candidates will hold tertiary qualifications in Science, Engineering, Planning or a relevant field, combined with a minimum 2 years’ experience in a Council environment or similar role.
You will have demonstrated knowledge of Resource Management Act requirements, including consent processing, compliance and plan making, as well as a sound understanding of contaminant and discharge related law and practices.
Additionally, knowledge and understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and Tikanga Maori will be highly regarded,
You will be confident in your ability to work autonomously with minimal supervision on a variety of tasks and projects, effectively managing competing deadlines whilst staying flexible enough to deal with urgent situations as required.
Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills will be pivotal to your success in this position. This includes high-level customer service skills, and the ability to engage with both internal and external stakeholders of all levels and all walks of life. You will need the analytical and judgement skills necessary to secure the best planning outcomes and deliver effective problem solving for the local community.
