About Burke Shire

Burke Shire sits in remote Far North Queensland, 400km north of Mount Isa, leaning against the Northern Territory border on the Gulf of Carpentaria.

This remote and unique Shire, with a permanent population of 350 people has two main townships, Burketown and Gregory. Burke Shire is an area of strong natural and cultural heritage. The Shire is home to Boodjamulla National Park and the World Heritage Site Riversleigh fossil fields as well as to some of Australia's most spectacular natural resources including world class Barramundi fishing, an abundance of bird life and (well fed) crocodiles. From Winter to Spring, a rare meteorological phenomenon known as Morning Glory can be observed in the skies above Burke Shire, as long, tubular clouds stretch up to 1000km in length.

Locals enjoy a relaxed lifestyle, without pollution, crowds, traffic congestion or overcrowding. The Shire offers the same facilities you'd expect in any country region around Australia – hotels and roadhouses that serve meals, public swimming pools, tennis courts, social sporting facilities and fixtures, children’s playgrounds, community halls and, in Burketown, regular passenger flights to Mount Isa and Cairns. Burketown provides grocery supplies and residents can also have orders picked up in Mt Isa, Cloncurry or Cairns by local freight companies. Burketown has a kindergarten and P-6 schooling. A full time staffed health clinic and medical services provided by the Flying Doctor is supported by regular visiting allied health professionals.

Numerous volunteer groups exist in the Shire, either local emergency response groups or clubs that run key local events e.g. horse races, campdrafts, fishing competition etc.  Being remote creates and stimulates a strong sense of self and communal reliance. This presents a wonderful opportunity to get involved in and engage with your new community: meet the locals and experience the satisfaction that comes from giving.
