About the Organisation

Lung Foundation Australia is a national, not-for-profit organisation with offices around Australia. Their vision is to ensure that lung health is a priority for all in Australia and to promote lung health by:

  • Educating the community in lung health and early detection of lung disease;
  • Reducing the burden of lung disease in the community through patient and carer support;
  • Influencing public policy, through advocacy across all levels of government; and
  • Raising funds for medical and scientific research.

The Lung Foundation Australia nationally employs about 30 professional/administrative staff, supported by a team of dedicated volunteers.

About the Australian Bronchiectasis Registry

Bronchiectasis is caused by chronic infection of the airways. There is currently no cure for this condition, and due to the large geographic distances in Australia, collaborative studies in bronchiectasis have traditionally been considered impractical, and there is little information available on the disease’s incidence, diagnosis or mortality rates in Australasia.

Lung Foundation Australia is working to fill this gap and improve the quality of life and outcomes for children and adults living with bronchiectasis by investigating the cause, treatments and quality of care through the Australian Bronchiectasis Registry.

Launched in collaboration with Australasian Bronchiectasis Consortium (ABC) in 2015, the Registry provides a platform to study the epidemiology of bronchiectasis and create opportunities for collaborative clinical research within Australia, also working collaboratively with international registries like the European Multicentre Bronchiectasis Audit and Research Collaboration (EMBARC) to leverage knowledge, expertise, protocols and ideas that will help to optimise research outcomes.
