About the Opportunity

WAMS now has an important opportunity for a full-time Nurse Unit Manager - Chronic Disease to join their team in Walgett, NSW.

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the successful applicant will be responsible for managing the Chronic Disease Building while ensuring quality person-centred nursing care through assessment, planning, and implementation in collaboration with individual/s and multidisciplinary health care teams.

More specifically, some of your key duties will include, but will not be limited to:

  • Ensuring Walgett Aboriginal Medical Service (WAMS) complies with its external regulatory requirements and internal policies and procedures;
  • Maintaining the overall coordination and effective functioning of all Medicare administration processes within WAMS;
  • Ensuring the WAMS Patient Information Management System (PIMS) “Communicare” has accurate data collection and entry for the National Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s) required by the Department of Health (DOH);
  • Providing clinical Nursing care to clients of the medical practice;
  • Assisting with continuous quality improvement and accreditation;
  • Working with staff to ensure the Chronic Disease Building is well resourced and meeting the needs of the community; and
  • Supporting WAMS staff through clinical support and education.

Please Note: The successful applicant must have an unencumbered C Class Driver's Licence as the position involves conducting Outreach programs throughout surrounding communities.

About You

To be considered for this position you will be an AHPRA Registered Nurse with recognised tertiary qualifications and demonstrable clinical, chronic disease and managerial experience. Experience working in a remote area will also be highly regarded.

Key to your success will be an understanding of the primary health care system and issues relevant to closing the gap in health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, including the ability to communicate and appropriately engage with Aboriginal clients. 

In addition, the successful candidate will have strong organisational skills and the ability to adapt and effectively manage competing priorities. You will have excellent report writing skills, and the ability to use (or quickly learn) the Communicare system to capture client information. High level leadership and interpersonal skills are also critical to this position, including the ability to effectively interact with a wide range of individuals.

About the Benefits

Your full-time commitment will be rewarded with a salary circa $100,000, negotiable with skills, experience and qualifications.

In addition, you will have access to the following benefits:

Walgett Aboriginal Medical Service is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (ACCHO) based in Walgett, NSW. Established in 1986, WAMS was the first ACCHO to achieve dual accreditation with the Quality Improvement Council (QIC) and the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP). Services offered include public health, family health, sexual health, dental health, mental health and GP Clinical Services. The not-for-profit organisation also provides a diverse range of health programs, including drug and alcohol and health-related transport services to facilitate attendance at specialist and other appointments.

CELEBRATING 35 YEARS OF WALGETT AMS

WAMS was established in June 1986 after many years of lobbying to provide a service to the Aboriginal community. The first Board of Directors moved a resolution to treat ALL people. Currently, 40% of our clients are non-Aboriginal. WAMS was originally located on the corner of Fox and Sutherland St with a staff of five and in 1989 moved to their current location in Pitt St.

WAMS now has a staff of over one hundred (including visiting personnel) making it one of the largest employers in Walgett and they endeavour to support their staff in whatever way they can and offer personal and professional development with training to upskill and fun days to boost morale and comradeship.
