Sunrise Health Service Aboriginal Corporation is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation.

The Sunrise approach involves Aboriginal communities taking part in controlling their own health. Everything from financial management and governance, staff selection and service delivery priorities are directed by the organisation's Aboriginal Board and Community Health Committees.

Servicing nine communities spread over 45,000 square kilometres, the Sunrise footprint covers Aboriginal communities that are some of the most disadvantaged in the Territory with some of the most complex health issues. About the Opportunity

Sunrise Health Service is currently looking for a full-time Program Manager to join their team in Katherine, NT, to lead the delivery of their new MECSH (Maternal and Early Childhood Sustained Home-visiting) program.

Reporting to the Director of Public Health and Planning, you will be providing assessment, screening, support, advice, and referral services to vulnerable and at risk mothers, families and carers with children to the age of three years old.

Your key responsibilities will include, but will not be limited to:

  • Working closely with other Sunrise staff, external organisations, and community elders to ensure the program is culturally and socially beneficial;
  • Supporting mothers and families to enhance their coping and problem solving skills, and ability to mobilise resources;
  • Promoting positive parent-infant interaction and the delivery of a standardised, structured child development parent education program;
  • Fostering positive parents skills and supporting families to establish supportive relationships with other local families and the wider community;
  • Working within the community to improve health literacy, identifying trends in maternal or early childhood health and associated health gaps; and
  • Building the capacity of Aboriginal staff to facilitate the delivery of culturally appropriate health care.

What will you need to succeed?

To be successful in this position you will hold tertiary qualifications in a health-related field, ideally as a Social Worker or Registered Nurse. A genuine interest in maternal or child health and demonstrated experience in this field will be essential.

It's crucial that you can demonstrate sound community engagement skills, with the ability to show initiative, problem solve, and identify areas for improvement, as well as undertake research, use data, and apply continuous improvement techniques.

Experience working with an Aboriginal organisation or communities will be highly regarded but is not essential, provided you have a commitment to the objectives and ethos of Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations such as Sunrise, can demonstrate a clear respect for Aboriginal culture, and are willing to learn. 

You will need an understanding of the issues pertaining to Aboriginal primary health care and the social determinants of health in these communities, with the clinical skills needed to work effectively in remote areas.

Your well-developed interpersonal skills will enable you to communicate confidently and effectively, as you build collaborative relationships with a wide range of internal and external clients, partners and stakeholders.

Please note: You must be willing to undergo a National Police Check and Working with Children Check, prior to commencing, and hold an unrestricted driver’s licence.
