About the Australian War Memorial

First opened to the public in 1941, the Australian War Memorial is a world-class combination of a shrine, extensive archive, and award-winning museum. One of Australia's major tourist attractions, they welcome over a million visitors each year as part of their mission to lead remembrance and understanding of Australia’s wartime experience.

More than just a monument, the Memorial is home to selections from a vast National Collection of war relics, official and private records, art, photographs, film, and sound, employed to relate the story of the Australian nation's experience in world wars, regional conflicts, and international peacekeeping. The Memorial's website is accessed by over 12,000 users daily seeking information on Australia’s military history, researching people and conflicts through their online collections, and researching commemorative events and activities.

About the Opportunity

The Australian War Memorial now has an exciting opportunity for a driven Lead Full Stack Developer to join their team in Canberra on a full-time basis.

Reporting to the Head of the Digital Experience section, this is a hands-on role that will see you leading the delivery of a wide range of website, 3D, virtual reality and other digital projects, managing a full-time staff member and relevant contractors as required.

This role will see you working closely with staff across the Memorial, particularly the IT team, but also a variety of content creators and museum specialists.

Your day-to-day responsibilities will include (but not be limited to):

  • Overseeing the design, development and review of website and intranet architecture, features and functionality;
  • Performing hands-on programming (front and back end development) and security updates for the Memorial website and intranet;
  • Working with content creators to deliver technical development for 3D, VR and 360 degree projects, using in-house skills and contract staff;
  • Reporting on performance analytics to drive quality improvements, focusing on user experience;
  • Providing strategic development, identifying new opportunities and broader scoping of work for the future;
  • Presenting project updates and other repots at meetings or other events as required.

About You

To be successful in this role you will need significant front end and back end programming experience, and be fluent with HTML5 and CSS. Experience working with PHP, JavaScript, and jQuery is also essential, as is an understanding of the Drupal Content Management System. Experience with React VR or other related frameworks will be highly regarded, but is not essential.

With a demonstrated background in project management related roles, you will be capable of scoping, planning and delivering both digital projects and routine work. You'll have a thorough understanding of the Software Development Lifecycle (e.g. Requirements, Design, Development, Testing) and exposure to Agile or iterative environments.

Prior leadership experience will be essential in successfully managing the performance of a diverse team of internal staff and specialist contractors, to deliver on shared goals. Capable of seeing the 'big-picture' of projects, you will have the ability to multi-task and manage various project elements simultaneously.

Finally, you will be a confident and engaging communicator, able to effectively articulate technical details to a range of non-technical audiences. Highly personable, you will be comfortable collaborating with diverse and multi-disciplinary teams or individuals, and be capable of building strong working relationships with staff across various areas of the Memorial.
