About the Opportunity

Barkly Engineering now has an opportunity for a dedicated and driven Line Borer/Senior Machinist to join the team in Mount Isa, QLD on a full-time permanent basis, performing both shop machining and field line boring operations as required.

Reporting to the Operations Manager, you will primarily be responsible for ensuring line boring and machining activities are carried out with a high degree of safety, accuracy and professionalism. Additionally, you will be performing a range of maintenance, fitting, and machining tasks.

More specifically, some of your key responsibilities will include (but will not be limited to):

  • Operating line boring equipment and general machine tools including associated fitting and welding activities both in shop and the field in a safe and efficient manner in accordance with Barkly Engineering's Health and Safety Standards;
  • Liaising with the Operations Manager and machine shop to receive and assess work orders;
  • Participating in regular safety and risk management activities;
  • Reporting all safety events, risks and hazards; and
  • Operating manual lathes, mills, drills and other associated machinery.

Please note: This role will work on a FIFO basis for the first 3 months (probationary period), preferably on a 4 weeks on, 1 week off roster, however Barkly Engineering are willing to consider a permanent FIFO opportunity for the right candidate.

About You

The preferred candidate will have a minimum of 2-3 years’ experience as a line boring operator. However experienced tradespeople with Fitting and Turning/ Machinist qualifications and at least 5 years post-qualification experience in a jobbing/machine shop wanting to transition and train in line boring are encouraged to apply.

It is essential that you are confident and capable in measuring and have recent and relevant experience doing so. You must also be proficient in welding with Stick and Mig including operation of ID welding equipment.

Barkly Engineering is looking for someone who is comfortable working autonomously and effectively on a range of different boring/workshop machines in order to problem-solve, anticipate issues and suggest solutions. Personable and willing to take the initiative, you will work effectively with a variety of diverse coworkers and stakeholders.

Additionally, Barkly Engineering is looking for someone who is innovative with a genuine interest and commitment to making this role their own. You will bring a ‘can-do’ attitude, a wide variety of experience and motivation and an ability to cultivate and develop a good rapport with customers when working on site.
