About the Organisation

Cairns Regional Domestic Violence Service Inc. (CRDVS) is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to using its specialist knowledge and skills to prevent domestic and family violence in the community and to empower those affected by it. 

Established in 1987, CRDVS has grown from a small team of volunteers to become one of the first four Regional Domestic Violence Services to receive funding from the Queensland government in 1992. Led by a Board and with 25 staff, the organisation provides a free, confidential and highly professional service for family members who are currently or who have experienced, domestic and family violence.

CRDVS is a child safe organisation and all children who come into contact with their services will be provided with a welcoming and safe service.

The service is staffed by a close-knit team of qualified professionals with experience in adult and child counselling, court support and training. Their vision is clear, and at the heart of everything they do:

About the Opportunity

Cairns Regional Domestic Violence Service (CRDVS) currently has a rewarding opportunity for a part-time Domestic Violence Counsellor to join their team in Cairns, QLD working 52.5 hours per fortnight on a 2-year fixed-term contract.

As an experienced counsellor, your primary responsibility will be to provide medium to long-term therapeutic DV counselling to persons who are affected by domestic and family violence.

Your day to day duties will include, but will not be limited to:

  • Providing crisis intervention, including intake and assessment, Domestic Violence Protection Order (DVPO) applications and crisis counselling to those affected by domestic/family violence;
  • Providing community education and interagency cooperation to work towards a concerted approach for the elimination of domestic and family violence;
  • Providing effective medium to long term therapeutic DV counselling, crisis intervention and crisis counselling;
  • Assisting when necessary to provide cover at the Family Law Court as part of the Family Advocacy and Support Service;
  • Working flexibly with a variety of modalities appropriate to counselling people as their individual needs and learning styles dictate;
  • Exercising initiative to maintain and further develop links, cooperation and networks with other organisations to provide effective services and improve coordination of service responses; and
  • Participating in support systems within the organisation including staff meetings, team supervision, staff appraisals, and informal contact.

About You

To be considered for this position you must have relevant tertiary qualifications in the social or behavioural sciences (e.g. Psychology, Social Work, Community Welfare) or a related discipline and demonstrable experience delivering direct counselling in the domestic and family violence sectors.

You will have an in-depth understanding of effects and causes of domestic violence, including knowledge of cultural differences and needs. An understanding of the impacts of domestic violence in relation to mental health is also required.

To be successful in this position you will also need to be able to demonstrate sound knowledge of legislation impacting on situations of domestic and family violence.

You will be an enthusiastic individual with outstanding interpersonal and communication skills to enable you to work cooperatively within a team and to liaise with government and non-government agencies to advocate on behalf of clients. Also required are computer literacy skills, including Microsoft Office applications.
