We believe in 100% choice and control when it comes to our clients, and we’re deeply passionate about making lives better by empowering people with disabilities to be as independent as possible. We are driven by our clients’ aspirations and desires, and work alongside them to develop the skills needed to improve their quality of life.

Continually at the forefront of change, and as one of NSW’s leading NDIS service providers, Unisson Disability has been at the forefront of providing support to those with disability and their families since 1924. Our services cover Sydney and the Central Coast, Hunter and Nepean Blue Mountains regions.

About The Opportunities

Due to continued growth, Unisson Disability now has multiple part-time and casual opportunities for dedicated individuals to join their teams as Disability Support Workers. Positions are available in both our Shared Living team and Supported Living team.

In both Disability Support Worker roles, primary responsibilities will include (but may not be limited to):

  • Supporting clients with personal care;
  • Assisting with daily living skills;
  • Supporting clients to carry out domestic duties;
  • Administering medication;
  • Supporting with the preparation and attendance of medical appointments;
  • Assisting with skill development and capacity building;
  • Promoting activities that offer meaningful experiences, increase social networks and opportunities for involvement within the community; and
  • Establishing a strong, yet always professional, relationship with clients.

Working in Shared Living

Our Shared Living team is looking for new team members in the Hunter/Newcastle, Central Coast, and Gosford/Wyong regions. Shared living staff will have contracts ranging between 40 to 65 hours over an average 5 days per week. You must be able to work a broad range of shifts across the week as your days worked will vary, and will often include nights and weekends.

In shared living, our Disability Support Workers provide constant support to multiple clients based out of the same residence (typically 3-7 clients at a time). You will be working as part of a team of Disability Support Workers in order to provide the level of support needed for these clients on a daily basis.

The complexity of support can be high in shared living as some clients have serious mental health issues. As such, a degree of resilience, emotional intelligence and mental capacity will be required in order to work effectively within this, at times emotionally demanding environment.

Another integral element of the Shared Living support role is valuing, and focusing on the independence of these clients. When you arrive at work, you are entering the home of your clients, and complete professionalism and respect for their place of residence will be key.

Working in Supported Living

Our Supported Living team is looking for new team members in the Port Stephens, Hunter, Lake Macquarie, Maitland & Cessnock regions. Shifts in the supported living role vary between 2-4 hours in length and can occur between the hours of 6am – 10pm, including split shifts. Supported Living Disability Support Workers see 2-3 clients a day on average.

Working in supported living provides you with the opportunity to develop deep and personal connections with clients, providing non-traditional disability support in a 1 on 1 setting in the community and at the home of your clients.

As these positions work with clients one at a time, there is a high level of importance on building rapport and forming a secure connection with these individuals. In addition, our Supported Living team members work unsupervised for the majority of the time, and as such, it’s essential that you be able to work effectively and efficiently in an independent manner.

Who We're Looking For

Relevant qualifications and/or experience within a similar role or industry may be beneficial, however are not required for your success. It will be your ability to engage with clients in creative and meaningful ways that will see you thrive.

At Unisson we provide a special and important service, and we’re looking for people whose values align with that of our organisation. You’ll connect with our shared goal to make people’s lives better, and you’ll find that yours becomes better by doing so.

Our Disability Support Workers place value on client independence and understand each client and their needs are unique. You’ll recognise that providing just the right amount of support to empower clients to be as independent as possible is the key to success in these roles. An understanding of what it takes to work with people with all types of disabilities, in addition to the challenges this will represent, is also critical. As such, it’s important you possess a level of maturity and emotional capacity to effectively identify and navigate serious aspects of these positions.
