About Life in Canberra, Australia

Canberra is the capital of Australia, a thriving, modern city of 345,000 based on the shore of the iconic Lake Burley Griffin. Located between Australia's two largest cities, Sydney and Melbourne, Canberra is home to many of Australia's most prominent landmarks, such as Parliament House, the High Court of Australia, the National Gallery, National Museum of Australia and Australian War Memorial, as well as world class sporting and entertainment venues.

As the country's largest inland city, Canberra boasts a particularly scenic setting amongst Australia's famous bushland. As a planned city, Canberra is designed around its gardens, parks and bikeways, which along with high quality schools and universities, makes it an extremely suitable home for families. The city is within easy driving distance to mountains and ski fields, or heading east for only a couple of hours, Sydney and New South Wales's famous beach-strewn coastline.

Canberrans enjoy the highest average disposable income and lowest crime rates of any Australian capital city.

About Clare Holland House

Clare Holland House is the main hospice serving the ACT and the region. Its location in a visible and commanding position at the eastern end of Lake Burley Griffin reflects its role as a premier facility serving all Canberrans.

Clare Holland House is managed by Calvary Health Care ACT under a contract with ACT Health. Recurrent funding for Clare Holland House is provided the ACT Government. Clare Holland House provides high quality, skilled and compassionate palliative care to patients with an advancing illness who are no longer responding to curative treatment.

Clare Holland House acknowledges that every patient's journey is unique, but the common conclusion to all those journeys should be a calm, peaceful and supportive environment complemented with the qualities of compassion, kindness, and respect for the preciousness of life.

Clare Holland House recognises that the future holds challenges for palliative care in the ACT and region. The aging population and improved acute care procedures and programs means a heavier demand for palliative care services in the future, and it will also challenge the common thinking that palliative care is largely linked to end of life care.
