About the Organisation

The Victoria Daly Shire Council became an entity on the 1st July 2008 through the amalgamation of 8 Northern Territory community councils covering an area of 168,000sqkm, an area approximately twice the size of Tasmania. Council's aim is to strengthen its communities with local people delivering shire services to their own communities with the skills and knowledge of their own culture, community and people.

About the Opportunity

Victoria Daly Shire Council has an exciting opportunity for a Shire Services Manager to oversee staff and services in the remote Victoria Daly Shire.

Based in Dagaragu and reporting to the CEO, the primary responsibility of this position is to provide a high standard of community services, supporting the health and well being of the community. You will be responsible for managing the day to day operations of 12 work areas and approximately 60 employees of the Shire Council in the community and surrounding ward.

More specifically this will include (but will not be limited to):

  • Directing, overseeing and monitoring all Shire Council core services and programs in the community and surrounding ward;
  • Managing all Shire Council assets in the community including plant equipment, buildings and vehicles;
  • Developing, supporting and maintaining effective consultant links with the local board and relevant community and government agencies;
  • Supervising and monitoring staff in a cross cultural environment with specific reference to developing the capacity of local Indigenous people; and
  • Maintaining a safe working environment, and ensuring all Shire policies and procedures are adhered to, and all resources effectively deployed.

This is a Senior leadership position and accordingly, the successful candidate will have demonstrated experience in successfully managing a range of service delivery activities and programs in a collaborative manner. You will have an appropriate tertiary qualification and/or significant relevant experience in a similar role, with a strong understanding of business and financial planning principles and practices.

A proven ability to lead, manage and develop staff from a range of backgrounds and in cultural context will also be pivotal to your success in gaining this position. Experience in working in remote communities, and specifically in consulting and negotiating sensitively and effectively with Indigenous people, is vital.

This role requires an applicant with strong personal integrity, well developed oral and written communication skills and a high level of self-motivation. Applicants with a track record of solving problems analytically and strategically will be viewed favourably. A current driver's licence is required.
