About the Organisation 

The Victoria Daly Shire Council became an entity on the 1st July 2008 through the amalgamation of 8 Northern Territory community councils covering an area of 168,000sqkm an area, approximately twice the size of Tasmania. Council's aim is to strengthen its communities with local people delivering shire services to their own communities with the skills and knowledge of their own culture, community and people. 

Victoria Daly Shire is a young organisation, so Council is currently recruiting people who share their vision to help develop the brand new organisation.

About the Katherine region

Katherine, with a population of over 10,000, is situated 300 km southeast of Darwin in the "Top End", the third largest community in the Northern Territory. The Region offers an abundance of experiences, boasting many natural attractions while providing a diverse outdoor and outback lifestyle for its residents.

Katherine is a naturally stunning part of the Top End, attracting tourists from around the world. Nitmiluk National Park near the town features many activities such as camping, swimming, fishing (lures only), sightseeing, canoeing, boat cruises and bush walk trails.

In addition to its unique natural beauty, Katherine is home to several churches, schools, sporting clubs, parks, a well kept golf course, a showground and a RAAF Base.

About the Opportunities

Victoria Daly Shire Council currently has an exciting position available for a Cultural Liaison Officer to join its team at its head office in Katherine.

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the primary purpose of the Cultural Liaison Officer is to provide all staff with cultural awareness support and advice appropriate throughout the Shire in each community.

More specifically your responsibilities will be to (but will not be limited to):

  • Ensure appropriate cultural consultation is conducted within the wards between shire staff and community members;
  • Provide cultural advice to all council staff and elected members;
  • Liaise and provide administrative support to local boards to ensure they are run culturally appropriate and achieve outcomes; and
  • Liaise and support Management in the development of culturally appropriate policies and procedures.

To be successful in this position you will have tertiary qualifications or experience in Community Development or similar. 

Victoria Daly requires applicants to have extensive cross cultural awareness. You are also required to have an understanding of business and legal planning principles and practices, a knowledge of legislative requirements and service agreements and a thorough knowledge of relevant legislation appropriate to Local Government.

Your qualifications and experience will be supported by well developed oral and written communication skills including the ability to consult and negotiate sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal people, produce clear and sound based reports in a timely manner and liaise effectively with a variety of stakeholders and resolve conflict.

You will also have strategic and decision making skills with an analytical and innovative approach to problem solving, excellent communication, interpersonal skills and organisational skills. A current driver's licence is required.

Victoria Daly Shire Council offers a family friendly workplace, with fantastic working conditions, including:

  • 38 hour working week (Monday-Friday, generally 8am-4:30pm);
