About Flinders Island Aboriginal Association

Flinders Island Aboriginal Association has been operating for over 30 years and is a small, community controlled Aboriginal service that provides health services, aged care, housing and CDEP along with a number of other programs primarily funded by the Commonwealth.

Flinders Island's geography ranges from high granite mountains to long sandy beaches to fertile farmland and wide lagoons - all teeming with wildlife.

Flinders Island offers many opportunities for bird watchers, photographers, rock climbers, divers, topaz fossickers, hikers, and fishermen. There are numerous shipwrecks and a rich history that dates back to its discovery by Europeans with the wreck of the ship "Sydney Cove" in 1797.

Only 35 minutes from Launceston, and 70 minutes from Melbourne, Flinders Island has regular air services from Essendon and Launceston.

About the Opportunity

As a result of growth, Flinders Island Aboriginal Association is taking expressions of interest for a Full Time Community Nurse role to be based on the amazing location of Flinders Island.

Within this role, you will work with a talented, multi-disciplinary team to provide health care services and education to people living in the Flinders Island community.

Key responsibilities of the role include (but are not limited to):

  • Providing support, leadership and coordination to the health team;
  • Providing health promotion and early intervention programs and services;
  • Coordination and provision of care to non-hospitalised sick people with an emphasis on chronic disease;
  • Providing home and centre based, non-emergency nursing care;
  • Providing support and coordination to the other health staff in the provision of holistic care;
  • Identifying gaps and opportunities to improve services;
  • Liaising with management and committee to ensure services reflect the needs of the community;
  • Maintaining a holistic approach to the health service that recognises the physical, emotional, cultural, social and environmental aspects to the individual and the community; and
  • Undertaking general administrative tasks relating to client care and reporting to management and funders.

The successful applicant will be a Registered Nurse with experience working in rural/remote or Aboriginal communities. You must be a mature, self-motivated and highly organised team player, with experience delivering community based programs.

Flinders Island Aboriginal Association is seeking an applicant with excellent written and verbal communication skills, the ability to quickly establish effective working relationships, and a confidence in dealing with difficult situations and/or people. You will have the ability to work effectively as part of a discreet health team, and maintain a high level of confidentiality in relation to patients' personal and medical information. The successful candidate will also possess basic to proficient computer skills in the Microsoft Office suite.

Ideally, you will possess the ability to communicate effectively with Aboriginal people and be committed to working with the Indigenous community. Due to the nature of the work, a police check and a 'working with children' check will be carried out before the finalisation of the appointment. Applicants will also require a current driver's licence.
