Corrections Consultant

Job No: 17475
Location: Standoff, Alberta

  • Seeking an experienced Consultant with expertise in modern day correctional practices, procedures, and initiatives to write a report to drive sustainability for the Kainai Community Corrections Society.
  • Unique and highly rewarding opportunity to make a difference with this innovative and first of its kind First Nations self-administered justice facility.

About the Organization

The Kainai Community Corrections Society (KCSS) is a preeminent leader and a shining example of a First Nations model for self-administration in the field of justice.

The  KCSS was established in 1989, and is located on the Blood Reserve at Standoff, Alberta.  The Society oversees the operation of a 24 bed male Aboriginal minimum security correctional facility.  There are five basic programs and services offered by the Society which are:  Community Corrections, Crime Prevention, Elders Program, Native Court Worker Program, and the Community Correctional Centre.

The Blood Tribe delivers community-based correctional services to members on its Reserve and to those in surrounding communities.  It recognizes the particular needs of Aboriginal people in conflict with the law, and a willingness of Aboriginal leaders, organizations, and communities to play an active role in delivering community-based correctional programs to their people.  The centre offers a community work program and life skills instruction which are intended to assist inmates in gradual reintegration into the community.

About the Opportunity

The Kainai Community Corrections Society (KCSS) is on the look out for a dynamic and experienced Corrections Consultant to prepare a report for the Board of Directors to present to the Deputy Solicitor General of the Province of Alberta.  The findings from the report will be instrumental in securing ongoing funding from the Alberta government in order to continue operations.

This report will present a visionary model for the ongoing sustainability of the Correctional Facility and set a shining precedent for First Nations self-administered justice.  The report will be crucial in promoting the development, control, and delivery of justice for First Nations individuals by the community itself.

In this short term contract role, you will research, review, and prepare observations of the current facility.  Your extensive experience in modern day correctional procedures will provide you with the expertise to make recommendations in reform and practice to ensure that the KCSS moves forward with a sustainable model. This report will analyze and recommend options for the KCSS to be able to continue its operations.

Extensive expertise and knowledge of modern day correctional procedures is required.  Knowledge of the Aboriginal culture and customs is desirable.

The report will be completed between the period of June 15 to September 1, 2010, and will be submitted to the Board of Directors of KCSS.

A per diem fee will be negotiated for your services based on your level of expertise. Travel will be required to Standoff, so a flexible schedule is required.
